Where's hot in August?

Forget British summer and find out where you should head for sun-soaked shores this August.
Thinking of ditching the British “summer” in favour of a sun-soaked August getaway? Well you’ve picked a great time for it – temperatures are at their highest across the northern hemisphere, so you could be soaking up the sun in easy-to-reach spots like Tenerife, Rhodes, and Bulgaria after a short flight. If you’re willing to go a little further, you’ll find balmy heat in far-flung Caribbean isles like the Dominican Republic. Plus, always-sunny Agadir pulls its top temperatures out of the bag in August. And we know that school’s out for the summer, so if you’re planning a trip to keep your little ones entertained, we’ve got a bunch of family-friendly hotels in these locations that will be just the ticket.

Once you’ve had a read, check out our August deals.

Rhodes

Hop on a flight to Rhodes and after four hours in the air, you’ll touch down on one of Greece’s prettiest islands. Summers here have a reputation for being scorchers, even through to the end of August. The average temperatures settle around the 30°C mark with a solid 13 hours of sunshine each day. Plus it’s got fantastic beaches, historic sites and buzzing nightlife – there really is something for everyone. Mercure Rhodes Alexia is at the heart of Bar Street in Rhodes Town, so it’s an ideal choice if you fancy a night out before spending the day relaxing by the pool. Alternatively, you can get a real feel for the island’s history in Lindos, where narrow, whitewashed streets wind up the hillside until they reach an ancient acropolis. Stay at the adults-only TUI BLUE Lindos Bay and you’ll be a five-minute cab ride from the centre – that’s if you can tear yourself away from its panoramic coastal views. If you’re travelling with the whole pack, TUI BLUE Sensatori Atlantica Dreams in Gennadi is a great option – it has an action-packed activity programme and its own waterpark.

Bulgaria

Average temperatures in Varna’s Golden Sands hover around a toasty 29°C in August, and it’s not uncommon for the mercury to climb even higher. Sea temperatures hit the mid-twenties, too, so you won’t need to brace yourself to take a dip. It’s pretty unlikely that you’ll get caught in a rain shower in August, so it’s a great time to explore the region’s sites – some of them, like the frescoed caves of the Aladzha Monastery, are carved right into the rock. Plus, there are acres of picturesque forests to discover at the protected Golden Sands Nature Park, where hot springs are dotted between the trees. If you’re travelling with the family, stay at TUI BLUE Nevis in Sunny Beach – there’s a great kids’ club, a splash park and it’s close to a theme park.

Morocco

Agadir is at its sunniest and driest in August, so it’s ideal for sun-seekers who like it hot. Average temperatures climb the thermometer past the 30°C mark for most of the month. Plus, there’s next to no rain, so you can barter for a bargain at the spice-scented souks, take a buggy ride through the desert, or find a sunbathing spot on the soft sand, without the risk of a downpour. Make the most of the weather at a beachfront hotel, like the Riu Palace Tikida Agadir – it pulls up alongside a private sweep of sand and comes with a chic pool scene that puts four poster daybeds by the edge of its huge swimming pool. Or, make a beeline for TUI SUNEO Hotel Kenzi Europa – its pool is geared up for families with a collection of waterslides and the evening entertainment line-up features the likes of snake charmers and belly dancers.

Tenerife

August is the perfect month to make tracks for the Canary Islands. Tenerife’s average temperatures reach heights of 28°C and the sun casts its rays for 10 whole hours – ideal if you fancy basking on a patch of the islands 400 kilometres of coastline. The beaches are as varied as they come, with a mix of volcanic black-sand beauties and straights of white sand that sprawl out for a couple of kilometres a piece. Stay at the Gran Melia Palacio de Isora , this five-star hotel is fit for royalty – it has 10 restaurants, a sanctuary-like spa and the Bali beds by the infinity pool provide the perfect place to lounge in the sun. And if you’re after a quiet escape, the adults-only TUI BLUE Los Gigantes sits next to the ocean and serves up stunning sights from nearly every angle – you can even see the neighbouring island of La Gomera from here. Plus, it’s a 10-minute walk to a marina which is lined with shops, bars and restaurants.

Dominican Republic

With average August temperatures ramping up to a sizzling 32°C, the Dominican Republic’s a great setting for sun-kissed selfies away from the grey skies that often reign over the British summer. The palm-fringed beaches look like they’ve come straight out of paradise, with sugary sand dominating most of the coastline and water that’s a perfect shade of Caribbean blue. If you want to spend your holiday sunbathing on the beach, pick the Riu Palace Bavaro – all that separates the hotel from a white-sand beach is a curtain of coconut palms. And if getting close to nature is more your style, head inland, where mangroves make way for green-peaked mountains and peacock-blue lagoons.
