View All DealsHolidays to Rhodes Town take you back to Medieval days, thanks to some fantastic heritage sights, then bring you up to date with designer boutiques and hip bars. And the beach is right in the centre of town too.
Set on the northern tip of Rhodes, the island’s capital, Rhodes Town, does double duty as a heritage hotspot and a holiday resort. The town is divided into 2 sections – a well-preserved Medieval old town and a newer town. Both sides are brimming with designer boutiques, upscale restaurants, traditional tavernas and contemporary bars.
The old town is a real throwback to the Middle Ages, when a group of crusaders, the Knights of St John, built a fortified city here. Behind the Medieval walls, sights include the famous Street of the Knights, a 600-metre stretch lined with old inns.
The curving shingle beach here is about 400 metres long. It’s really central, which makes it incredibly popular. One end comes with a view of the old town’s rampart walls. Conveniently, snack bars and restaurants are right on hand, and there’s even the odd passing masseuse.
About an hour’s drive will take you to Lindos – a postcard-pretty village filled with whitewashed houses and cobbled streets. The hill that overlooks the village is home to the famous acropolis, which has been around since the 3rd century BC. Take the 10-minute walk – or 5-minute donkey ride – to the top, and you’ll be able check out the remains of the ancient Temple of Athena and see what’s left of a Byzantine church.
Head to the town's award-winning, long pebble and shingle beach to swim and sunbathe, or pre-book a diving session - please ask your travel agent for details. If the beach is too crowded for you, there are plenty of others within easy reach. Faliraki has a long stretch of beach, or try the Bay of Ialysos.
