Despite what the name suggests, holidays to Golden Sands are about much more than the beach.
Legend has it, Golden Sands was once raided by pirates who discovered gold. Mother Nature swiftly took her revenge by turning the treasure into sand – hence the resort’s name. And it’s a fitting moniker, since all eyes are on the long, medallion-coloured sandy stretch.
Bulgaria does big beaches well, and Golden Sands’ four-kilometre-long belt is no exception. In fact, it’s got some of the purest sand in the country, along with light-blue waters. It pairs these natural charms with family-friendly touches, like minigolf, fairground rides and a shop-packed promenade. There’s a waterpark close at hand, too.
Golden Sands certainly isn’t lacking on the activity front. On top of the waterpark and beach, you’ve got go-karting, children’s playgrounds and a ferris wheel. There’s even a restaurant shaped like the Eiffel Tower. Evenings are busy, as well, thanks to a collection of beachfront cocktail bars and clubs.
It’s not all beach and bright lights, because this place has a natural side, too. A five-minute drive inland will land you at the protected Golden Sands Nature Park, where bottle-green forests are interspersed with hot springs. It’s also a bit of a wildlife-lover’s paradise, so keep an eye out for roaming roe deer, wild boar and birds.
