Where is hot in May?

Spring into the sun on a getaway to these destinations in May.
Looking for a pre-summer trip? Make a break for Lanzarote's sun-soaked shores for a dose of Vitamin D a short hop from home. Or, if you fancy going far-flung over the half-term break, Florida’s temperatures are starting to get toasty. Whatever your vibe – nearby escapes or faraway shores – this time of the year tends to be quieter, too, so it's perfect for a beat-the-crowds getaway to one of these sunny destinations...

Once you’ve had a read, check out our May holiday deals.

Morocco

If you fancy going beyond Europe, try  Morocco. This African gem’s got a flight time of around four hours and its spring temps can hit 28°C – perfect for wandering around Marrakech’s top landmarks like Bahia Palace and Jardin Majorelle, a botanical garden that spans a hectare. If you want to stay in the centre, stay at TUI BLUE Medina Gardens – this adults-only oasis has a tropical-looking pool scene and it’s just a 10-minute walk from Jemaa el-Fna square and its markets. Sunbathing sessions on the beach more your scene? Agadir’s the top dog, thanks to its six-mile-long strip. Or, if you’re after an off-road adventure, hop on a tour through the Atlas Mountains.

Lanzarote

By the time May comes along, the Canary Islands have been basking in the sun all winter, so Lanzarote’s a sure bet for some spring sunshine. And with temperatures hovering in the mid to high 20s, sun-kissed days on sandy stretches can start earlier. Our pick? Playa Blanca’s Blue Flag beach – this sandy curve’s sandwiched between two other beaches along the coast, including laidback Playa Flamingo. This is where you’ll find TUI BLUE Flamingo Beach – just a couple of minutes’ stroll from the sand. For a day out, take a tour through the lunar-like landscapes at Timanfaya National Park where you can tuck into tasty dishes grilled using a volcano's natural heat.

Florida

May is Florida’s so-called shoulder season, when the weather’s warm and theme park queues are shorter. Visit this month to dodge the rush of families heading for Orlando during the school summer holidays and enjoy riding the rollercoasters before the humid heat really kicks in. Staying at Disney’s Beach Club Resort will put you within strolling distance of the action at EPCOT in Walt Disney World Resort. If theme parks aren’t your thing, there’s also International Drive. You can easily spend days roaming its 23-kilometre-long stretch of shopping outlets, eat-till-you’re-stuffed buffets and family-friendly attractions.

Cyprus

With about 320 days of sunshine a year, it’s a no-brainer that Cyprus has bagged a reputation as one of the best places in the Med to catch a tan. And things really start to heat up in May, so it’s the perfect time to roll out a towel on one of the isle’s Blue Flag beaches – there are over 70 to pick from. Fancy a stay on one of them? Nissi Beach Resort is pitched steps from the sand just down the road from Ayia Napa – Cyprus’ best-known party spot – and is five minutes way from WaterWorld – one of Europe’s biggest waterparks. After a culture fix? Head for Paphos on Cyprus’ west coast. This city is known for its ancient temples, tombs and ruins – perfect for living out those Indiana Jones fantasies. `

Mauritius

Floating off the coast of Africa, Mauritius has one of those enviable, hot-all-year-round climates. Although May is technically the island’s winter, you can forget your woolly hat, as temperatures can creep into the 30s, while the sea simmers around 25°C. It’s no surprise then that relaxing beside beaches and lagoons are top of most tourists’ to-do list. You can level up the luxury with a stay in Sugar Beach, one of the island’s original five-star hotels with a postcode along its longest white-sand beach in Flic En Flac. Here, you can dine on sushi overlooking the shore, go out on glass-bottom boat trips, or take part in an al fresco yoga class. Plus, the nearby ocean’s a scuba diver’s paradise. The underwater caves, wrecks and reefs are home to the likes of barracudas, rays, turtles and sharks.
