If you fancy getting out of Europe, try Morocco. This African gem gives you a taste of the exotic, with a flight time of just under four hours. Spring’s one of the best times to visit, before the summer sees the mercury rocket to a sweltering 37°C. So, you can explore Marrakech’s souks, squares and palaces in sightseeing-friendly temperatures. The TUI BLUE Medina Gardens makes a great base. This city centre oasis flaunts a tropical-looking pool scene and palm-filled gardens, just 10 minutes’ walk from the buzzing Jemaa el-Fna square. This country’s not short on beaches, either. Agadir’s the top beach spot, thanks to its six-mile-long stretch. And, if you get bored of sunbathing, you can venture out on an off-road adventure into the nearby Atlas Mountains.

The Canary Islands have been basking in the sun all winter long, so Lanzarote’s a sure bet for some spring sunshine. Temperatures here rarely fall into single figures, and May’s no exception, with the mercury with temperatures hovering in the mid to high 20s. The sun’s best enjoyed on Playa Blanca’s Blue Flag-winning beach, which the town’s named after. This sandy curve’s sandwiched between two other beaches along the coast, including laidback Playa Flamingo. This is where you’ll find the TUI BLUE Flamingo Beach – just a couple of minutes’ stroll from the sands. Beaches aside, May is this month’s a great time to explore Lanzarote’s other big attraction – Timanfaya National Park. Our Timanfaya & Cesar Manrique Tour takes you from the peaks and craters of Fire Mountain to the bright-green El Golfo lagoon, with a wine-tasting session thrown in for good measure.

Visit this month to swerve the summer rush of families heading for Orlando’s theme parks during the school holidays. You’re strolling distance from the adrenaline-fuelled action at Disney’s Beach Club Resort or, if theme parks aren’t your thing, there’s also International Drive. You can easily spend days roaming its 23-kilometre-long stretch of shopping outlets, eat-till-you’re-stuffed buffets and family-friendly attractions.

Cyprus gets a head start on summer, thanks to its southerly position near the Middle East. This is the island that boasts 326 days of sun a year. And things really start to heat up in May, so it’s the perfect time to roll out a towel on one of the isle’s countless Blue Flag beaches. One of the most popular is Nissi Beach, which is topped off by an off-shore island. The Hotel Nissi Beach sits overlooking the shortbread-coloured sands here. Plus, five minutes down the road you’ve got WaterWorld – a mammoth, mythical-themed waterpark. If you’re after a dose of culture, head for Paphos on Cyprus’ west coast, which backs up its petite-and-pretty beach with time-stamped temples, tombs and ruins.

Floating off the coast of Africa, Mauritius has one of those enviable, hot-all-year-round climates. May is technically the island’s winter, but you’d never know it. The temperatures can still creep into the 30s, and the sea is a bath-warm 26°C. That means the isle’s talc-white beaches and turquoise lagoons are top of most tourists’ to-do list. A catamaran cruise is a great way to get around – you’ll stop to snorkel, swim and spot pods of dolphins. Then retreat to the Sugar Beach Golf and Spa Resort which is set on Mauritius’ longest beach in Flic En Flac. Here, you can dine on sushi overlooking the sands, go out on glass-bottom boat trips or take part in an al fresco yoga class. Plus, the nearby ocean’s a scuba diver’s paradise. The underwater caves, wrecks and reefs are home to barracudas, rays, turtles and sharks.
