Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Playa Blanca holidays put you on the southern tip of Lanzarote. This place, which translates to ‘white beach’ in Spanish, offers year-round sunshine and a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere. Spend your break bouncing between a trio of gold-sand beaches and strolling along chic marinas like Marina Rubicon, where exclusive yachts line up along the shore.

Sophisticated resorts and volcanic backdrops

If you’re looking for a mix of holiday staples and sophistication, you’re in the right place. Playa Blanca pairs a seafront promenade and lively karaoke bars with a smart marina and upscale dining spots. Some places even offer views of the Montana Roja or Red Mountain, the nearest dormant volcano. It comes up trumps on the location-front, too – it’s just a 30-minute taxi ride from Arrecife Airport, so you can go from the plane to your hotel room in no time. Where to stay? The TUI BLUE Flamingo Beach and the HL Rio Playa Blanca are good options.

A trio of Blue Flag beaches

Finding somewhere to lay out your towel is as easy as one, two, three. You’ve got a trio of beaches to pick from, each of which have been granted Blue Flag status. Playa Blanca, the main town beach, comes with a well-stocked promenade over its shoulder, while Playa Flamingo is a man-made number known for its protected breakwaters, which keep the waves at bay. Then, there’s Playa Dorada – a snorkelling hotspot famous for its reefs and white-gold sands. You can push the boat out with a trip to the Atlantic Museum, too. It’s home to underwater concrete sculptures, and is near Playa de las Coloradas.

Timanfaya and the Papagayo Coast

Sunbathing breaks are best spent watching the geothermal heat displays at Timanfaya National Park. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is home to the red-tinged Fire Mountains, and is filled with volcanic boreholes, which erupt with steam when guides pour water into them. You can search out Papagayo Beach’s hidden coves in the Marietas Islands National Park, too. Or, set your sights on the Los Hervideros Cliffs. They’ve got dedicated walkways and viewpoints designed by Spanish architect Cesar Manrique, which blend into the natural landscape.
