In June, temperatures start cranking up and holiday hotspots are enjoying some downtime before the busy summer season properly kicks off, making it the ideal time to take a break from the daily grind. The school holidays don’t begin for another month, so taking off in June means you’ll get quieter beaches, shorter queue times at top attractions and you’ll find it easier to book into top restaurants. So, where should you go? Easy-to-reach suntraps in Europe like Portugal and Greece are a great option with short flights giving you more time to explore your destination but far-flung hotspots are a great pick for June sunshine, too.

Portugal
Make tracks for the Algarve before the summer rush and you’ll touch down to mid-twenties temperatures, a lot of sunshine and a heap of sandy beaches. If your holidays are all about exploring and getting out and about, you’ll love Portugal. Want to perfect your putt? Head to Albufeira, which deals in world-class golf courses, buzzing nightlife, and an impressive 25 beaches. Plus, June hosts the Santos Populares – or ‘Popular Saints’ – festivals, celebrating St Anthony, St John and St Peter. Expect street parties, balloon-decked sculptures and bonfires. Or, for hikes that take you above the clouds, opt for Madeira, a Portuguese island.

Greece
June shows off the Greek islands at their best. Temperatures are comfortably warm and while the tourist hotspots will be throwing open their doors, you won’t have to compete with scores of people for a place to lay your towel, munch on meze and sip a cocktail. If you want to stay on the mainland, consider Halkidiki, Kalamata or Parga – they’re great springboards for exploring the rest of the country. A city break to Athens is also a strong contender. Greece’s capital comes up trumps with lots of ancient history, picturesque neighbourhoods and landmarks like the mighty acropolis. You’ve also got plenty of big-name islands to choose from – Crete serves up 650 miles of coastline and some impressive historical sights, including Knossos palace, while Corfu is known for its green interior. Kos and Zante, have impressive beaches and lively after-dark scenes, while Rhodes takes the prize for the best sunshine record in Greece.

Cyprus
If you’re fed up of the UK’s unpredictable drizzle, Cyprus is the spot for you. The summer months usually bring a long dry spell, with barely any rain falling between June and September. Add this to balmy temperatures and days when the sun seems reluctant to set, and you’ve got a winning holiday formula. Over in Limassol, the Festival of the Flood takes place the day after Pentecost and sees most towns hosting watersports competitions, dance shows and street food stalls offering Cypriot dishes. Travelling with tots in tow? Head to Protaras – it’s a hit with young families thanks to its golden beach and clear shallow waters. Plus, the main strip has a good mix of restaurants, cafés and bars.

Florida
Fly off to Florida before the summer heat ramps up for a completely different kind of holiday that delivers sun and fun in scores. On one side of the coin you've got the state's world-famous theme parks and on the other you've got some of the best beaches north of the Caribbean and The Everglades. Plus, there’s plenty of low-cost and even free attractions like Icon park, museums and bike trails like the Blackwater Heritage State trail to keep you entertained. Malta
It may only extend for 300 square kilometres, but Malta holds its own against the Mediterranean’s major players. It comes complete with a 7,000 year history, 300 sunny days a year, and clear waters perfect for exploring the coral reefs just off the coastline. June brings toasty temperatures, so it’s the perfect time to take advantage of the island’s best bits – think snorkelling, al fresco dinners and day-long boat trips. If you want to be in the heart of the action, stay in St Julian’s and you’ll have a roster of restaurants, cafés and clubs all within easy reach.
