Where's hot in April?

Uncover the best places to go for sea, sand and sunshine in spring.
Planning to escape those inevitable April showers? We don’t blame you. This drizzly spring month might be a washout in the UK, but it’s a great time to head abroad. With temperatures reaching highs above 20°C, Portugal is a good pick for a close-to-home escape, while Florida’s got the goods for a sunny escape if you fancy going further. Here’s our pick of where to go for warm weather in April…

Portugal

You don’t have to travel halfway across the globe for some springtime sunshine. Temperatures in the Algarve reach highs of 23°C, with nine hours of sunshine, so you’ll be warm enough to switch between sunbathing, sightseeing and a spot of golf. The Algarve, in the south of Portugal, is sheltered from wind and rain by the mountains in the north, so you can expect warmer and drier weather here. Albufeira covers both sides of the coin – its old town’s lined with cute cafés and boutiques, while its newer half is centred around a strip packed with bars. Further east, Lagos is best known for its beaches – the spot that steals most of the attention is Meia Praia, which stretches for more than four kilometres from the town’s marina.

Gran Canaria

Take off to Gran Canaria in April, and you’ll touch down to temps pushing 20°C – beats the UK average of 9°C, right? The towns on the island’s southwest coast tend to see the toastiest temps, so you’ll want to take off to Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogan if you’re serious about topping up your tan. The latter’s known as Little Venice thanks to a criss-cross of canals, cute footbridges and narrow streets dressed in colourful bougainvillea. Yep, it’s as dreamy as it sounds.

Thailand

Thailand’s hottest season runs from January until April, so you can expect plenty of sunshine-filled days. It’s also the best time for exploring World Heritage Sites, like the stunning Similan Islands, which are open from mid-October to mid-May. Temperatures in April peak at a super-toasty 33°C, but luckily, there’s the Songkran festival to keep you cool. This event runs every April and involves a huge water fight where locals and tourists soak each other with balloons and water pistols. Fancy it? Stay in Phuket or Khao Lak to be right in the heart of the action.

Florida

The Sunshine State never gets particularly cold, so it’s a great pick for a toasty getaway at any time of the year. The temperatures are nice and hot in April and the rainy season hasn’t kicked in, so you won’t have to plan your day around any showers. Nobody wants to ride the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster while it’s raining, right? If you prefer beaches over big thrills, Miami also enjoys highs of 26°C – the perfect temperature for spending time on Miami Beach and exploring the murals of Wynwood’s Art District. The Space Coast sees similar temperatures, too, where you can mix lazy beach days with trips to the Kennedy Space Center and boat rides where you can spot manatees.

Morocco

Morocco lines up an average temperature of 19°C in April, with highs reaching 27°C. The landscape of this West African country is particularly lush and green from March until May – making it the ideal time for exploring Agadir and the Atlas Mountains. If you’re heading to Marrakech, it won’t be too hot to explore the souks and famous market square. By day, you can browse the stalls and haggle for bargains, and by night, you can watch street performers and try some delicious Moroccan cuisine. If you’re not sure where to stay, the TUI BLUE Medina Gardens is just five minutes away from the souks and blends original Arabic features with a contemporary style.
