Weddings in Greece

Orpheus and Eurydice, Odysseus and Penelope, Paris and Helena – some of the most famous couples in ancient literature have made Greece the stuff of romantic legend. And, with its out-of-this-world scenery, unrivalled history and laidback way of life, it’s little wonder it’s such a popular place to say ‘I do’. But which part of the country will you choose for your big day?

Crete is the biggest and the oldest of all the Greek Islands, so it’s a bit of an expert when it comes to weddings. Not only does it offer up fantastic settings for your big day, it provides loads of things to do when the ceremony’s done and dusted. Visit the Palace of Knossos, for instance, or hire a car and go off the beaten track.

Take one look at Corfu and you’ll see why it’s called the Emerald Isle. It’s covered in olive-cloaked hills, huge vineyards and cypress trees, so it’s not short on big-day backdrops. Along the coast, you’ll find perfect swathes of golden sand, while in the capital, Corfu Town, winding streets are lined with pretty churches and art museums.

A three-fingered peninsula clinging to the mainland, Halkidiki offers up all the Greek stereotypes. Cue pretty fishing villages, crumbling ruins and monasteries set high in the hills. You can have your ceremony in one of the region’s town halls.

The island of Kos is home to every type of beach you can think of, from white sandy swathes to tiny, rocky coves. Turn your attention inland, however, and the scenery comes curtesy of whitewashed villages and flower-blanketed fields.

If you like the idea of stepping back in time, Rhodes should be on your big-day radar. Its old town is a World Heritage Site, and one of the finest Medieval citadels in existence. Rhodes also boasts the best sunshine record of all the Greek Islands.

Clinging to a volcanic crater, Santorini packs a serious punch on the scenery front. We’re talking blue-domed churches, cobbled alleyways and whitewashed houses that tumble down the hillsides. Weddings abroad don’t get much more scenic than this.

Skiathos is one of the more untouched Greek Islands, so if you’re after a slice of authentic Greece for your big day, you’ll strike gold here. The whole place is a picture of old villages, olive groves and orchards.

Pristine beaches, craggy cliffs and plunging valleys – with its incredible scenery, Zante is perfect wedding territory. There’s lots of choice when it comes to deciding where to walk down the aisle, and some of the venues come with outside terraces.
