How to pick a hotel in Las Vegas

Vegas bound? Here's how to pick the perfect hotel.
The glittering, non-stop city of Las Vegas lines up something for everyone. Whether you’re travelling with the family, on a couples’ retreat, or a group holiday, there are activities, sights and spectacular shows to suit you. To help you pick the perfect base for your trip, we’ve matched some of Las Vegas’ best hotels to the kind of holiday you’re after…

CIRCUS CIRCUS

Best for: families

Circus Circus is located at the quieter end of Las Vegas’ strip, so it’s the perfect option if you have the kids in tow. The hotel has a huge on-site amusement park, with over 25 attractions, including thrilling rollercoasters that whizz you around at 55mph and classic fairground rides like bumper cars. There’s also a rock climbing wall, a 4D theatre, and free circus shows where you’ll see trapeze artists, unicyclists and jugglers taking to the stage. To top it all off, dining options range from classic American Diner-style cuisine to Italian and Mexican, to suit the fussiest of eaters.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Best for: foodies

You’ll take a bite out of the Big Apple, quite literally, when you stay at New York, New York. The Manhattan-themed hotel not only manages to cram in the famous city’s iconic landmarks – including the Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty – it also boasts an epic restaurant scene. The food court is set out like a typical New York street with no less than 17 eateries to choose from. There’s everything from hot dogs and freakshakes to crepes and tacos, plus an authentic sandwich deli, and Italian, Mexican and sushi places. We challenge you to try them all – and then check out the nine bars onsite serving up cocktails, craft beers and wine. There’s even a Coyote Ugly-themed bar and a classic Irish pub.

MANDALAY BAY RESORT & SPA

Best for: luxury

The opulent, newly-revamped Mandalay Bay Resort & Spa is the ideal choice for a luxurious getaway – and it’s aptly designed to look like two glittering gold bars. The resort lines up an 11-acre pool complex with an adults-only section, a shopping mall and a clutch of swanky bars. There’s also an impressive 30,000-square-foot spa which features 23 treatment rooms offering the likes of honey bodyscrubs and coconut massages. The chic, modern rooms are decorated in gold and white, and they come with marble walk-in showers and huge bath tubs, too.

THE LUXOR

Best for: shows and theming

Las Vegas’ Sahara-style climate is a perfect match for The Luxor hotel, which brings the iconic sights of Ancient Egypt into the heart of the city. It’s housed under a giant pyramid, so as soon as you arrive you’ll feel like you’re walking into one of the original Wonders of the World. Inside, the Egyptian theme continues with opulent sculptures and decorations, gold embossed décor and hieroglyphic engravings across the walls. Entertainment here is all about the shows and exhibitions – you’ve got performances from the Blue Man Group, magic shows with illusionist Criss Angel, and semi-permanent Titanic and Bodies exhibitions. And, if that’s not enough, you can hop on the free tram to Excalibur to check out the Medieval theming, fairytale castle-style setting, and the Tournament of Kings jousting show.

THE BELLAGIO

Best for: couples

Las Vegas’ Italian-inspired hotel should be your number one choice for a romantic escape. As well as being home to those world-famous dancing fountains, The Bellagio lines up a tranquil pool scene, a charming Mediterranean-inspired courtyard and garden, and a clutch of swanky bars. When you’re not strolling hand-in-hand through the impressive botanical displays, you can enjoy a romantic meal at one of the many fine dining restaurants. There’s the French-inspired Le Cirque, which is decorated with some of Picasso’s original paintings, or Lago by Julian Serrano, which is a Michelin-starred eatery with floor-to-ceiling windows. And, if after your amazing break you decide to make things official, you can tie the knot at The Little White Chapel which is handily located just down the road.

MGM GRAND

Best for: partygoers

Vegas isn’t short of bars, clubs and, of course, casinos – in fact, you’ll find it hard not to stay up till dawn. If you want to get into the spirit of a party holiday, you’ll want to be right in the centre of the action, which is why MGM Grand is the place to be. This legendary hotel boasts a central location on the strip, and is constantly buzzing with activity. It has its own onsite five-storey nightclub, called Hakkasan, which has been frequently voted as one of the best in the world, and features swanky lounges, huge dance floors and a rooftop garden with views over the strip. Plus, during the summer, the famous Wet Republic pool party is on five days a week and headlined by international DJs like Tiesto and Calvin Harris.
