Best places to have your stag do abroad

Planning a stag do abroad? Here are the best places to go.

Planning a stag party can be tricky – it might even be harder than that best man’s speech you’ve got to write... But don’t stress, help is at hand. Whether your groom is after an adrenaline-fuelled break, a beer bonanza or a chilled-out beach holiday, here are the best places to have a stag do abroad. Take your pick from the likes of party favourites Ibiza and Marbella, or sun-bleached Tenerife and Bulgaria, and make it a stag they’ll never forget.

1. Croatia – the ideal all-rounder

For a stag do destination that offers up more than a hangover, Croatia’s a top choice. You’ll find everything from pebbly beaches to open-air nightclubs in this culture-crammed slice of Europe. Going with a group of adrenaline junkies? Pick the city of Split and you can race your mates on a go-kart track or go paintballing and white-water rafting. By night, there are plenty of watering holes to try, too. Then there’s Hvar – another no-brainer when it comes to European stag weekends. We’re talking VIP beach parties, sunset cruises and the Pakleni Islands, home to secluded coves and first-rate snorkelling. Or, for a more sophisticated bachelor party, pick Dubrovnik with its high-end bars and world-class restaurants. Your days in this TV-famous city can be spent wandering around the old town, hopping between islands or kicking back by the coast.

2. Ibiza – the dance-all-night one

If your groom’s a party lover, plump for Ibiza. Big-name clubs and famous DJs are this Balearic Island’s forte – everyone from Judge Jules to Dave Pearce have played here. San Antonio has the beach bars nailed, while livelier Playa d'en Bossa is home to famous clubs like Ushuaia, Café Mambo and Bora Bora. But away from all that, Ibiza has a sleepier side. When you’re not nursing your hangover on one of the sandy beaches or out at sea on a cruise, you can go sightseeing in the capital. Ibiza’s got a UNESCO-protected old quarter and bustling markets that are well worth a visit. And, thanks to its calm and clear waters, kitesurfing, jet-skiing and scuba diving are all great stag do activities here. The best dive sites include the impressive Don Pedro shipwreck near the harbour, and the hidden La Cueva de La Luz AKA the Cave of Light.

3. Tenerife – the adventure-ready one

Thanks to its year-round sunshine, Tenerife's got great weather’s on tap, so it doesn’t matter what time of year you’re organising your friend’s stag do for. And that’s not all this Canary Island boasts – you can let your inner child loose at the water park, spot whales in the wild, or go on an off-road quad biking adventure. Other top stag activities here include water sports and go-karting. Or, if your groom likes to get clued up on culture, Mount Teide is a must-visit. For the best nightlife, Playa de las Americas on the southwest coast is the leader of the pack. Bars and clubs aren’t short in supply, so organising a bar crawl is a doddle. The main hub is the neon-lit Veronicas strip, or if you want a slightly quieter scene, choose the Starco Centre.

4. Bulgaria – the budget-friendly one

For a cheap stag do destination that doesn’t compromise on quality, say hello to Bulgaria. Local watering holes here are tucked down hidden side streets and the beer prices are low – the average price for a pint is less than a pound. If your groom needs a bit of R&R before his big day, honey-hued sands come up trumps. Unwind on the famous Sunny Beach, backed with everything from restaurants to market stalls – perfect for grabbing an afternoon pick-me-up when your group gets peckish. Or, take a daytrip to Golden Sands in Bulgaria’s Varna region. Nightlife in Bulgaria centres around Sunny Beach’s nightclubs and bars, which are open until the early hours. Sip cocktails here before heading to buzzing spots like Cacao Beach Club, which regularly has famous DJs playing.

5. Marbella – the oh-so luxurious one

Holiday like an A-lister in Marbella – the celebrity favourite on Spain’s Costa del Sol. In this glitzy city, you’ll find a flashy marina sprinkled with luxury yachts, as well as star-studded clubs and boutique shops. Fill your stag do itinerary with a visit to the charming old town – bustling cafes, historic sites and tasty tapas are on the cards here – or simply top up your tan on one of the resort’s 23 beaches. Unsure which one to choose? Nagueles Beach has fine sand, a seafront promenade and watersports like windsurfing and jet-skiing, or you can hire pedalos. Then, swap your swim shorts for your best going-out gear and head for the bars and clubs at the Golden Mile or neighbouring Puerto Banus. Keep a lookout for Champagne parties on the shore. For a quieter evening, the old town’s more relaxed bars are happy to oblige – it’s the perfect place to start your night, too.
