Split holidays

Split, Croatia

Holidays to Split take you to a vibrant spot where a crop of different cultures meet.

Adriatic attraction

Known for its irresistible beaches, terracotta rooftops and fascinating history, Split is fast becoming one of the most popular destinations in Croatia. It’s the largest city on the Dalmatian Coast, set on the Adriatic Sea, half way between Dubrovnik and Zadar.

Ancient streets

Walking through Split’s winding streets is like stepping back in time. Peppered with Roman buildings and ruins from the Middle Ages, this city is steeped in history. As you meander through the old town’s narrow lanes, expect to stumble across beautiful stone buildings and grand archways. The ancient palace and cathedral are particularly impressive.

A Blue Flag beach

The curling coves along Split’s coast have formed several gorgeous beaches, but Bačvice tops them all. It’s near the centre of the city, and the sand is so spotlessly clean that the beach has been awarded a Blue Flag. Shallow, clear water means it’s perfect for families, while more adventurous swimmers can find deep water further from the shore.

Party central

If you think Dubrovnik is the party capital of Croatia, think again. From classy cocktail bars on the seafront to lively bar crawls in the city, Split wakes up once the sun goes down. There are loads of nightclubs to choose from and, in the summer months, you can dance at the beach parties until the sun comes up.

Beaches

Split’s sands

While most of Croatia’s coastline is fronted by rocks and pebbles, some of the seaside spots in Split get you a slice of sand. There are a few options within easy reach of the centre – the city’s main beach is an easy walk from the Old Town.

The big beach

Bacvice Beach is the closest streak of sand to Split’s centre. It comes with shallow waters, so it’s a top pick for families, plus it’s only a 15-minute stroll from the Old Town.

The secret beach

Jezinac Beach is a good pick for peaceful sun-seeking days. You’re unlikely to steal the sand all for yourself, but it tends to stay a lot quieter than the spots closer to the centre of the city.

Shopping

Bargain buys

Diocletian’s Palace has an underground shopping scene – it’s cellars come with stalls that are packed with souvenirs and artwork crafted by local artisans.

Mid-range buys

Split’s home to one of the biggest shopping scenes along the Dalmatian Coast. The Mall of Split has loads of big names from the international shopping scene, like Pull & Bear, Zara and Mango.

Designer buys

Marmont Street’s the spot for luxury buys – shops stretch from the Riva promenade to the National Theatre in the Gajo Bulat Square.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

Split’s Old Town supplies plenty of tucked-away spots for low-key evenings. Thanks to its coastal location, seafood’s on the menu in most restaurants, and there are usually plenty of wine pairings to match.

Lively evenings

The bars and restaurants along Riva’s seafront promenade tend to step up the pace after dark, with live music on the cards most nights of the week. Most of them spill outside on the streets, so it’s a perfect spot to enjoy a drink while the sun sets.
