It’s 10 unique islands float in the Atlantic Ocean, around 500 kilometres off the coast of Africa, so you can expect year-round warm weather and an archipelago of white-sand beaches. A flight from the UK only takes around six hours, so holidays to Cape Verde are ideal for those who aren’t up for a long-haul flight, too. So, where should you stay? 1. MELIA TORTUGA BEACH RESORT & SPA, SAL

This hotel makes it easy for you to take advantage of Sal’s beach scene – it’s set on one of the island’s sandy stretches. This place is all set for families, offering spacious rooms and a busy activity programme. Pool-wise, you’ve got a double helping of huge swimming pools – one’s best for chilled-out sunbathing and the other keeps the spotlight on sporty activities. For little ones, there’s a pair of kids’ pools, too. And, when it comes to relaxation, the relaxation-ready spa delivers. Make sure you pay a visit to the thermal circuit, which lines up a steam bath, perfumed showers and a sauna.

Your All Inclusive stay gives you access to no less than four restaurants. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are dished up at the main buffet restaurant – expect show cooking and themed nights. In the evening, you can choose between the O’Grille, Pasta Nostra and Aqua restaurants. Meanwhile, on the beach, you pay a little extra to tuck into locally sourced seafood at the beach bar/grill.

2. TUI BLUE CABO VERDE, SAL

This adults-only hotel is set right on the oceanfront near Algodoeiro Beach. Designer décor in cool hues, a swanky spa and a first-rate dining selection are just a taste of what’s on offer here. The All Inclusive dining scene lines up a buffet restaurant, an Italian and an Asian Teppanyaki, where you can catch a fire show. If you fancy adding some extra luxury to your stay, then swim-up and sea-view rooms, complete with a Jacuzzi® are available.

The candy-coloured streets of Santa Maria are only a short drive away from this resort. Head to the pier in the morning and you can watch the tuna fisherman bringing in their catch. There’s also a chic Ibiza-style beach club just around the corner, if you fancy letting your hair down.

3. MELIA DUNAS RESORT, SAL

If it’s a facility-packed hotel you’re after, take a look at the Melia Dunas Resort. There are two swimming pools that are open to all guests, and another that’s exclusive to anyone staying in The Level adults-only rooms. If you opt for a room in The Level, you’ll get perks like spa discounts, too. Wander through the hotel’s tropical gardens and you’ll reach Algodoeiro Beach, a cotton-white stretch of sand where you can get involved with watersports or just unroll your towel and sunbathe.

And, elsewhere in the grounds, there’s a palm tree-lined boulevard, which is dotted with restaurants and bars. For drinks, there’s an impressive total of eight bars to choose from, including the Gabi Beach bar, which hosts sunset parties. And, for food, five restaurants ranging from a big buffet spot to an Indian have you covered. Plus, if you want to get to know Sal beyond the beaches, this hotel’s just five minutes’ drive from the island’s capital, Santa Maria. 4. RIU PALACE BOA VISTA, BOA VISTA

This resort scores top marks for style, and is surrounded by sand dunes and sugar-white beaches. Inside, the décor is fit for royalty – think polished marble floors and contemporary design features. There are three à la carte eateries – a steakhouse, a Japanese and a fusion restaurant – as well as a buffet restaurant, so you can be sure that there’s something for everyone.

During the day, you can relax in the in-water loungers that float in one of the three pools, try out some watersports or take part in a RiuFit exercise class. This place is perched on Praia das Dunas, next door to its sister hotel, Riu Karamboa and the island’s capital Sal Rei is only a 10-minute drive away.

5. MELIA LLANA, SAL

After an adults-only escape? The Melia Llana’s the one for you. It’s right by the beach, so it couldn’t be easier to kick back on Sal’s trademark white sands. Here, you’ll find a fancy beach club and loungers reserved for hotel guests. Back at the hotel, the pool scene’s just as good for waterside lounging – the duo of swimming spots is set into a sun terrace speckled with comfy sunbeds and a bar.

For food, you can choose between four restaurants – one meal per week at the Italian eatery is included in your stay. The Level bar’s just for guests who’ve upgraded – just ask at reception when you’re checking in – and there’s a pair of bars open to all guests. You can keep your workout routine going while you’re away by taking part in organised activities like Yoga, Pilates and dance classes. Then, unwind afterwards at the swanky spa.

6. HOTEL RIU TOUREG, BOA VISTA

This hotel, which is designed to look like a sandcastle, sits on one of Boa Vista’s best beaches – Praia de Lacacao. There’s plenty of options when it comes to dining and drinking, including a Cape Verde-themed restaurant. The world’s your oyster when it comes to pools, with a total of six to choose from. You can expect swanky swimming pool accessories, including underwater sunbeds, a whirlpool bath, a swim-up bar and mini-waterslides for kids.

The beachfront spa lines up a long list of treatments, as well as an adults-only Turkish Bath. There’s also an exclusive area with a swimming pool and an à la carte restaurant, which you'll get access to if you stay in an adults-only room.

7. ROBINSON CLUB CABO VERDE, SAL

For a luxury escape, say hello to the adults-only ROBINSON Club Cabo Verde in Sal. This seafront hotel opened its doors in late 2019, and is packed with top-notch facilities. We’re talking a spa with nine treatment rooms – you’ll get direct ocean views from the rooftop sauna – and a pair of big pools. Cape Verde is known for its watersports, and you can expect Catamaran sailing, windsurfing and stand-up paddle-boarding at this hotel.

Food wise, there are three restaurants to choose from, including a tapas joint and a traditional Cape Verdean number.
