Best time to visit Cape Verde

With sunshine in steady supply year-round and sandy beaches to rival the Caribbean, Cape Verde has it all.
The best time to visit Cape Verde? Between November and June – the temps are toasty, and there’s hardly any rain, making it perfect for escaping the chilly UK winter. Often described as Africa’s answer to the Caribbean, Sal and Boa Vista (two of the 10 islands that make up the archipelago) have their own distinct vibe – so whatever you’re looking for in a holiday, you’re sure to find something that suits you to a tee.

When’s the weather best in Cape Verde?

With a mild year-round climate, there’s never a bad time to visit Cape Verde. If lying undisturbed on a lounger is your holiday vibe, head to the island of Boa Vista between December and March. It’s dry and sunny, and there’s often a breeze – perfect sunbathing conditions. April to June brings cooler temps and fewer crowds, making it an ideal time to explore Sal’s coastal towns like Santa Maria and Murdeira or hike up to the volcanic peaks of Pedra de Lume.

When’s rainy season?

Cape Verde’s rainy season, known to the locals as “tempo das chuvas”, is typically between August and October. The showers are short and sharp, meaning you can still catch the sun between the clouds, and it works wonders for the islands’ natural beauty. Santo Antão – a short flight and ferry ride from Sal – boasts valleys with cypress, acacia and mimosa trees.

Windsurfing, surfing, diving and snorkelling are all on the cards here. And if you visit in March, you can catch the world kite surfing championships on Sal’s iconic Ponta Preta beach.
