Georgioupolis holidays
Jump to sections
With a generous dusting of golden sand, and a village dotted with eucalyptus trees, Georgioupolis holidays have everything a relaxing Cretan getaway needs.
Hard to say, easy to experience
A pretty place backed by tree-stacked mountains, Georgioupolis village is set between Chania and Rethymnon on the island of Crete. You can dedicate your days to its long, sandy beach, which gently shelves into the sea. The busiest spots are studded with straw parasols and sunbeds, but tread further out and you’ll come to some footprint-free pockets of sand.
Village charm
The hub of the village – both in terms of geography and community – is the harbour. It’s the point where the River Almyros flows into the sea, and it’s lined with little wooden boats. Head down there early in the morning to see fishermen chugging back to shore with hauls of fish.
A chapel by the sea
One of Georgioupolis’ things to do is visit the chapel of St Nicholas. It’s a little whitewashed place at the end of a rocky path that juts out into the sea. The chapel’s dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the protector of seafarers. The rocky path is home to crabs, so wear protective footwear.
