If the idea of a poolside breakfast overlooking the lake gets you out of bed in the mornings, that’s exactly the start to your days you can expect here. Hang out at the rooftop bar all day if you like, or head out kayaking, e-biking or walking then return for sunset drinks with live music. It’s a great location for making the most of a holiday in Riva.

Wine’s a big deal here too, with a long list of local ones to try alongside four courses of Italian classics each evening.

Best for: total relaxation

Just outside Bardolino, this place feels like a little world of its own. The hotel itself is surrounded by gorgeous gardens and five outdoor pools, including two for kids. Indoors you’ve got two more pools plus a sauna, Turkish bath and a menu of massages and treatments on offer in the spa.

For when you want to explore, the lake’s just across the road, and Bardolino’s a pleasant 30-minute stroll up the promenade. There’s a hotel shuttle to get you there quicker if you like.

3. Hotel Milano, Maderno

Best for: timeless Italian style

Picture the classic Italian getaway and that’s the Milano. From the classical columns and frescos outside to the marble floors and oil paintings inside the place oozes timeless style. This is a spot to take things slow, whether that’s lingering over an al fresco breakfast on the terrace, getting lost in a book with a view of the lake or strolling Maderno’s colourful promenade.

4. Hotel Continental, Torbole

Best for: getting active

In an elevated position above the little lakeside town of Torbole, this spot serves up some pretty impressive views, out over the lake and up into the surrounding mountains. It’s a steep hill down to Torbole but there’s a bus service that’s free with the summer card included in your stay. And, frankly, you might find it hard to leave the warm outdoor pool set in Mediterranean gardens dotted with olive trees, unless it’s to get stuck into the free yoga and guided walks on offer.

Best for: a touch of luxe

Relaxation comes as standard at the adults-only Villa Nicolli. From the saltwater outdoor pool, chic rooms and atmospheric cellar spa to the views over vines from your balcony, this is a place where you simply can’t help but breathe a little bit deeper.

Sample some of the local vintages with a wine tasting experience, or take an Italian cooking class – and you’re only a 20-minute walk from Riva for when you want to get stuck into more.

6. Hotel Eden, Sirmione

Best for: ferry-hopping round the lake

You’ve got a front row seat to Lake Garda when you stay at the Eden. And it couldn’t be easier to get out onto the water, with ferries leaving from right beside the hotel and heading off in all directions.

The whole place has a fresh, modern feel but step outside and you’re right into the beating heart of Sirmione’s historic centre.

7. Hotel Vega, Malcesine

Best for: making the most of the scenery

Another spot where the lake takes centre stage, the Vega really makes the most of its location, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the restaurant and a lakeside hot tub. Look the other way, though, and you’ll find Malcesine sits at the foot of the biggest mountain in the area, Monte Baldo.

A rotating cable car from the town is your route up to the heights, and it’s an easy walk to get to it from the Vega.

8. Hotel Nettuno, Bardolino

Best for: sunset dining

Sunsets are a big deal at the Nettuno. Settle in for long, leisurely evening meals on the terrace watching the sun sinking over the boats bobbing on the lake just metres away. Inside, everything’s crisp and calming, but you’re not far from bustling Bardolino and its promenade lined with bars and coffee spots.

Best for: all-round excellence

It’s hard to find anything the Eden Garda doesn’t do well. Great views over the lake, tick – and there’s a hot tub on the rooftop terrace to enjoy them from. Classic Italian dishes in the restaurant – tick, and you’ll get free drinks with your evening meals too. Fresh, spacious rooms, tick – and they all have a balcony or terrace too.

The Eden’s just outside Garda, one of the most popular bases around the lake, and there’s a frequent shuttle service from the hotel to the town centre. No wonder people come back here year after year.

10. Hotel Villa Dirce, Limone

Best for: views for days

The adults-only Villa Dirce is set into the cliffside above Limone and the views you’ll get from the outdoor pool or your room’s balcony or terrace are nothing short of next level. Inside, there’s plenty to catch your eye too, with modern rooms done up in bright colours with quirky artwork.

Stroll down the hill into Limone (or take the free shuttle bus) to explore this enchanting little lakeside town, with the sweet scent of orange blossom in the air and lemon groves stretching across the hillsides.

11. Catullo Hotel, Sirmione

Best for: friendly service

Fabio and Elena, the brother-and-sister duo who run the Catullo, really know how to make you feel at home here, so expect a warm welcome and great service during your stay. The hotel’s full of character and original features, and it’s right in the historic centre of Sirmione, so you don’t have to go far to explore the town’s medieval castle, Roman villa and winding alleys stuffed full of little bar and cafés.
