Luggage

Can I carry liquids on the flight?

Yes – but there are rules you’ll need to follow at airport security.

Packing liquids in your hand luggage:

  • Liquids count as part of your 1-bag hand luggage allowance

  • Each liquid must be in a container of 100ml or less (3.5 fluid oz)

  • All containers must fit inside one clear, resealable plastic bag

  • The bag must be no larger than 20cm x 20cm (8in x 8in) or hold up to 1 litre

  • Larger containers must go in your checked-in luggage

How to pack your liquids:

  • Make sure containers fit comfortably in the bag

  • The bag must be completely closed and containers clearly visible

  • You’ll need to bring your own plastic bag – most airports sell them before security

  • Each person, including infants, can carry one plastic bag

What counts as a liquid?

Liquids include:

  • Water, drinks, soups, syrups

  • Creams, lotions, oils

  • Perfume, sprays

  • Gels (e.g. hair gel, shower gel)

  • Foams (e.g. shaving foam, deodorant)

  • Pastes (e.g. toothpaste)

  • Liquid-solid mixtures

  • Mascara

  • Anything with a similar consistency

Medical and dietary liquids:

  • You can carry over 100ml if it’s for medical or dietary needs

  • You’ll need a doctor’s letter to show at security

Duty-free liquids:

  • Must be carried in a sealed security bag with the receipt inside

  • Keep the bag sealed throughout your journey

Just so you know:

Some UK airports are installing new scanners

  • And may allow you to leave larger electrical items in your hand luggage

  • And may allow larger liquid containers

But for now, we recommend you follow current guidelines, especially for your return flight, as not all airports have changed, and destination airports still have restrictions

Before you travel

Check the rules at:

  • Your departure airport’s website

  • Any airports you’ll travel through, including your return journey

  • Check government hand luggage restrictions at UK airports and at Irish airports for details on medical and dietary liquid exceptions.
