Puerto del Carmen holidays are all about up-tempo evenings and waterfront dining, with a triple helping of beaches giving you a slice of island life. Lanzarote travel tends to serve up year-round sunshine, so whether you’re after beach days or trips to the capital of Arrecife, you can do it all in toasty temperatures.
Puerto del Carmen’s a holiday hub on Lanzarote’s south-east coast, and with a spot in the Canary Islands, sunshine’s always on the cards. There’s a lively waterside promenade and a main strip – Avenida de las Playas – filled with bars and clubs. Plus, the old town’s authentic restaurants are a great place to sample some traditional Canarian cuisine.
You have a trio of Puerto del Carmen’s sandy beaches to pick from when you fancy a day by the coast. On Playa Grande, sunloungers and parasols top the sand and there’s a gently shelving shoreline. Playa Chica old town, meanwhile, is about 10 minutes’ walk away and it comes with a scuba diving centre. The third beach, Playa de los Pocillos, is popular with surfers thanks to its trademark Playa Pocillos windsurf waves.
Arrecife daytrips take you to the island’s capital, where you can snap photos of landmarks like the 16th-century Castillo San Gabriel, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Castle of San José and the Cesar Manrique windmill sculpture. And Puerto del Carmen excursions don’t stop there – you can also venture out to places like Timanfaya National Park, Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua caves. These spots are just the ticket for outdoor adventures.
