1. MAURITIUS

Choose Mauritius for your adults-only getaway and you’ll enjoy toasty temperatures and sugar-white sands. Plus, you can discover natural attractions like the giant water lilies at Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens. The glass-clear waters and coral reefs make the island a great place for snorkelling, too. Dip beneath the blue and you can spot everything from blue tangs to barracudas and clownfish.

If you’re after a tranquil and secluded hotel the adults-only Lagoon Attitude is the one for you. This relaxed resort is next to Anse La Raie’s lagoon, lapped by bath-warm waters. What's more, it has three outdoor pools, including a lake-like number which plays host to activities like aqua aerobics. 2. ST LUCIA

St Lucia is known as the ‘Hawaii of the Caribbean’ thanks to its storybook scenery – think mountains, rainforests and secluded beaches. And, it’s the ideal place for a couples’ retreat, thanks to its range of boutique resorts and hideaway hotels nestled in the hillsides. 3. MEXICO

Mexico lines up adventurous activities, as well as a beach scene that’s up there with the best of them. You can tick off one of the Seven Wonders of the World with a daytrip to the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, zip-line through the Sierra Madre Mountains in Puerto Vallarta or hop on a boat to explore secluded bays and underground caves. If kicking back and soaking up the sun is more your thing, Cancun flaunts a 22-kilometre belt of talc-white sand.

4. KOS, GREECE

You might associate Kos with being a bit of a party hotspot, but the Greek island has a low-key side too. There are ancient ruins, traditional towns full of sugar-cube houses, hills blanketed by wildflowers and over 290 kilometres of coastline to explore. Small, scenic resorts like Psalidi are made for rest and relaxation, and you’ll find quaint Greek tavernas, local bakeries and a laidback promenade here. It’s close enough to lively Kos Town, where you’ll get your fix of historical sites like the 14th-century Neratzia Castle, too.
