What your music taste says about your dream holiday destination

Press play on your summer soundtrack.
When it comes to choosing where to go on your next getaway, there are lots of things you can do to help you decide. Somewhere you’ve been before, maybe, or a totally new destination? How about that place someone in the office hasn’t stopped talking about since they’ve come back to work with a glorious tan? They’re all great ways, but have you ever thought about letting your music taste decide where to go for your next break?

We’ve teamed up with Spotify to help you find your perfect holiday based on your music taste. Keep reading to find out why your fave playlist is the perfect match for a getaway to Majorca, Morocco and more…

If hip-hop and rap’s your jam…

Hip-hop and rap are far from the new kids on the block in Morocco. Known as Rap Maghribi, this music scene has been growing steadily since the early 1990s. Inspired by American rappers, artists tackle cultural, social and political issues in their lyrics.

If you’re a live music lover, the L'Boulevard festival in Casablanca is the place to be. Held each year in September, it showcases up-and-coming talent alongside the more established voices of the genre. Prefer to listen without the crowds? Taghazout’s beaches are perfect for laying down your towel, slipping on your headphones and pressing play on your favourite playlist.

If pop’s your jam…

Still can’t get Kylie’s 2001 Fever album out of your head? Or, do you know the lyrics to every single track that’s on the top 10, week after week? We reckon a trip to Turkey is the thing your summer’s missing. The Turkish Riviera and your pop playlist is the combination you never knew you needed. Soak up the sunshine with your line-up of guilty-pleasure tunes beside Olu Deniz’s Blue Lagoon – the meeting point of the Mediterranean and Aegean seas – or reminisce about your favourite pop bangers at a beach club in Antalya. Once the sun’s set, the bars in Bodrum’s Gumbet all share your passion for pop, so they’re a perfect pick for big nights out.

If house music’s your jam…

House music the only thing you’re playing? We don’t blame you. Majorca has a music scene worth writing home about. Some of the biggest names in dance, house and techno are no strangers to the island’s well-known resort, Magaluf. This place doesn’t need an invitation to have a good time, with a neon-lit strip that gives Ibiza a run for its money. And if all-night sessions are a thing of the past for you, you’ll be pleased to hear you still can get your fill of house –and techno tunes during the day at beach clubs dotted around the resort – what more could a house music lover want?

If rock’s your jam…

If rock and indie tracks are always queued on your daily playlist, it’s time to make like lightning and head to Greece. Why? Because you can’t get more rock ‘n’ roll than plate smashing. Traditional Greek music may be more mellow than your average rock track – it’s played on a bouzoukia, which looks like a guitar’s even cooler cousin. Sound like your vibe? Zante has the goods. Press play on your ultimate indie playlist while strolling through the old town, ticking off top sights like the Monastery of Strofades and Saint Markos Square.

If folk music’s your jam…

Folk music fans, we’ve got the destination match for you. If the likes of Bob Dylan and Mumford & Sons are always on repeat, you’ll want to check out Croatia. There’s a real blend of folky sounds here, with influences from Europe, the Med and the Balkans. Klapa, which translates as ‘a group of friends’, is loudest along the coast in places like Split and Dubrovnik. It usually involves a group of men singing a cappella while wearing traditional clothing or, nošnje, as they perform. Hit shuffle on your fave folk playlist as you wander through Split’s UNESCO World Heritage-stamped streets and museums – does it get any cooler than this? We don’t think so.
