Best holiday destinations for halal food

Get the inside scoop on the best destinations for a halal-friendly getaway.
Turkey’s sizzling street food, Morocco’s fragrant tagines or Amsterdam’s diverse food scene? If you’re chasing flavour, you’re in the right place. But first up, let’s dive into what halal means. Halal is food that’s permissible according to Islamic law, an essential part of Muslim life. As halal travel booms, more destinations, hotels and restaurants are stepping up to cater for Muslim travellers – so finding incredible food abroad has never been easier. Ready to dig in? Here are the best halal-friendly destinations to visit.

Turkey

Turkey is a go-to for halal-friendly travel, where everyday life naturally aligns with Muslim needs - from widely available halal food to mosques and prayer facilities across the country. Plus, with around 98% of the population identifying as Muslim, you won’t need to plan your meals or routines too carefully. But Turkey isn’t just convenient – it’s seriously good-looking, too.

Head to Antalya for over 400 miles of sun-soaked coastline. Go inland, and you’ll find olive groves and avocado farms shaping the fresh, flavour-packed dishes you’ll spot on local menus. Add in buzzing bazaars and striking Ottoman architecture, and you’ve got more than just great food and coastline.

Further along the coast, Dalaman brings a more laid-back vibe with a long history as a holiday fave. The clue’s in the nickname – this stretch is part of the Turquoise Coast, dotted with hidden coves, calm bays and sweeping sandy beaches. Between dips in the sea, you’ll find plenty of places to eat, shop and unwind.

Spain

If you’re after a halal-friendly escape a little closer to home, Spain ticks all the right boxes. From halal options in restaurants and hotels to more than 250 mosques across the country, it’s an easy choice for Muslim travellers who don’t want to compromise.

Food-wise, you can’t come to Spain without trying tapas – and Seville is one of the best places to do it. For halal options, Tanto Monta Restaurant is a solid pick, just a short stroll from the historic Puente de Isabel II.

If you’re craving beach time with a side of culture, the Valencia region delivers. Sitting on Spain’s east coast, it’s home to the white-sand stretches of the Costa Blanca. When you’re ready for a break from the beach, there’s plenty going on – think theme parks like Terra Mítica, or city days in Valencia and Alicante, where stylish shops, contemporary galleries and top-tier museums await.

Egypt

In Egypt, halal food is part of everyday life, with Islam shaping the country’s cuisine since the 7th century. One dish you’ll see everywhere is Ful Medames – a long-time staple made with fava beans, oil and lemon juice. It’s filling and easy to customise with extras like garlic, onion, egg or sausage, depending on where you get it.

You’ll find it served up across Sharm El Sheikh, where restaurants line the streets and the energy stays high well into the evening. Beyond the food, there’s a mix of big-name shops and traditional bazaars to haggle at.

Over in Hurghada, things shift towards the sea. This Red Sea hotspot is known for its bright coral reefs, making it a top pick for snorkelling and diving holidays. Expect clear waters, colourful marine life and even the chance to explore World War II shipwrecks beneath the surface.

Amsterdam

For a halal-friendly city break with a different vibe, Amsterdam is a great shout. Islam is the second-largest religion here, so finding halal food is straightforward, with plenty of restaurants catering to Muslim travellers across the city.

The setting does a lot of the heavy lifting, too – think narrow streets, historic townhouses and canals weaving through it all. The best way to get around? Hop on a bike like the locals or take to the water for a canal cruise.

There’s plenty of culture to tap into as well. Art lovers can head to the Van Gogh Museum to see some of Vincent van Gogh’s most famous works like Sunflowers, Almond Blossom and The Potato Eaters. For something a little different, pair sightseeing with a canal cruise, or head out to Zaanse Schans – a traditional Dutch village known for its iconic windmills and cheese-making.

Morocco

Morocco is a natural fit for halal-friendly travel, where almost all food is halal by default. Expect big flavours, too – think couscous, sweet and savoury mrouzia – that’s lamb tagine with almonds and honey to me and you – and crisp, pastry-wrapped briouat.

For heaps of culture, head to Marrakech. The city’s famous for its spice-filled souks, striking mosques and blush-coloured walls. Highlights include the iconic Jardin Majorelle, the historic Saadian Tombs and the ornate El Bahia Palace.

If you’re more about beach days, Agadir delivers with a nine-kilometre stretch of sand lined by palms. Just up the coast, Taghazout has a more laid-back feel, thanks to its surf scene and easy-going charm.
