A town with sunset views

Turgutreis, on Turkey’s southern coast, is one of the major players in the Bodrum peninsula’s seaside portfolio. Set amid mountains, islands and citrus groves, this western-facing spot is famous for its kaleidoscopic sunsets. And it comes with a lively spread of shops, bars and restaurants, not to mention a contemporary marina with modern boutiques and waterfront eating places.

A beach on the doorstep

The beach here is within easy walking distance – in fact, it’s just across from the main shopping streets. The long strip of coarse sand dips gently into shallow waters, so it’s perfect for children. And about 5 kilometres around the peninsula there’s Fener Beach – a windier set-up that’s ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Turkish crafts and jewellery

One of Turgutreis’ biggest draws is its shopping. For starters, it has one of the region’s biggest markets – some say it even outdoes the bustle of Bodrum’s. There’s also the aptly-named Artist Street, near the marina, where local painters sell their wares. And, close by, you’ll find a walkway of prettily lit artists’ carts and stalls plying jewellery and handicrafts.

Easy daytrips

About 20 minutes by bus takes you to the peaceful village of Kadikalesi. It’s one of those word-of-mouth places that once you hear about you just have to visit. There’s a ruined castle on the hill and an old Greek church in the village centre, while down on the beach, the seafront tavernas spill out onto the sand. If you’re up for more distant shores, a hydrofoil can take you across to Kos Town in 15 minutes.
