Balatonfüred holidays

Scenic walks along the prom, lakeside dipping and fine wine sipping – that's holidays to Balatonfüred in a nutshell.

Stroll or cycle

You'll find Balatonfüred on Lake Balaton’s northern shore, where cobbled streets wind past elegant 19th-century buildings and charming churches. Walk along the Tagore promenade, named after the Indian poet who planted its first-ever tree. Fast forward to today and this path’s lined with countless leafy trees, ideal for a shaded 30 minutes’ stroll or gentle cycle along the shoreline. You’ll find lush lawns and bright blooms at every turn. And don’t miss a taste of the local favourite – crispy Lángos flatbread, served at cosy spots along the way, a great match for the laid-back lakeside vibe.

Wine and unwind

As the town’s part of Hungary’s wine district, a visit to a nearby vineyard, like Gyukli Pince, is a must. Take a guided tasting tour and then kick back on their terrace, sipping wine while soaking up blissful countryside views. On top of this, the promenade plays host to Wine Weeks every August – the area’s top food and drink festival. For up to three weeks, local wine farmers fill their wooden stands with hundreds of vintages, just waiting to be popped and poured.

Good vibes and boat rides

Balaton’s the star of the show here, so dive in and make the most of it. Hit the sandy shores for a swim in the warm 25°C water or test your balance on a paddleboard. Alternatively, hop aboard a nostalgic open-deck boat for a daytime cruise. With wooden tables and chairs, you can sit and sip a refreshing drink from the bar while watching the sun sparkle on the water. The gentle sound of the boat’s Hungarian flag fluttering in the breeze adds to the chilled vibe. Fancy this? Head to the port just past the Fisherman & Ferryman statues, cross the bridge and you’ll be ready to set sail.

Beaches

Esterházy Beach and Waterpark

At the eastern end of the promenade, Esterházy Beach greets you with vibrant flower displays and a super laid-back vibe. For a fee, it’s all at your fingertips – a sandy shore, grassy spots, waterslides and sun loungers, plus plenty of food options. Awarded the Blue Wave Flag for its eco-friendly upkeep, this beach is as charming as it is well-kept.

Kisfaludy Beach

Also towards the eastern end of the promenade, Kisfaludy Beach is a family favourite. Pay at the door and the largest leisure beach on the northern Balaton coast is yours to explore. Kids can splash in adventure pools or whoosh down waterslides while you sunbathe on the grass, watching boats drift by. If hunger strikes, you can grab a snack at a beachside bar.

Gödrösi Public Beach

Take the 7355 bus or cycle for 35 minutes to nearby Tihany and check out the free-to-enter Gödrösi Public Beach. Great for dedicated sunbathers who don’t mind minimal facilities, this spot offers a relaxed, no-frills experience. With a few restaurants across the road, you won’t go hungry – but bringing an umbrella might be a good idea since shade is limited.

Shopping

Bargain buys

For a taste of the fresh local produce, take a 15 minutes’ walk from the centre of town to the Balatonfüred City Market. You'll find mostly food inside, but on Saturdays, there’s other knick-knacks like secondhand books kicking about, just waiting to become your next beach read. Just keep in mind that it’s closed on Sundays, like most supermarkets in the area.

Mid-range buys

Shopping opportunities are fairly limited here. But on your lakeside strolls, you can have a mooch around the shops near the marina and poke around for some local handicrafts to take home.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

If you love a good G&T, Égszínkék’s the place to be. Just a few minutes’ walk from the western end of the promenade, this bar boasts one of Hungary’s biggest gin selections and shakes up swanky cocktails. Combining the contemporary bar culture of the capital with a relaxed vibe, it’s the ideal spot to unwind with a drink in hand.

Lively evenings

For a livelier night out, head to Cocomo. This modern, ambient bar stays open late and often has local performers in, so you can have a little boogie while sipping a classy cocktail. Take a 5 minutes’ walk from the western end of the promenade and you’ll soon have their menu – with more cocktails than you could count – right at your fingertips.

Must-try local eats at Hatlépcsős Étterem

They’re well-known locally for their velős pirítós at Hatlépcsős Étterem – it’s essentially crunchy, re-toasted marrow spread on toast that pairs well with a glass of wine as an afternoon snack. You can find this charming, traditional spot right in the middle of town, so take a seat on one of the benches and get a taste of the local flavours.

Traditional soups at Vitorlás Étterem

Vitorlás Étterem’s got a fab lakeside lookout spot just off the promenade. In an old shipbuilding workshop, it’s got heaps of history and stories to tell – just ask the staff if you’re interested in hearing more. They plate up a mix of local and international dishes here, with the catfish soup being a real crowd pleaser.

Cakes galore at Karolina Café

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, stop by at Karolina Café on the promenade. This family-run spot’s known for its fluffy homemade cakes, inspired by Mama Karolina’s recipes and the owners' creativity. Pair your treat with one of their fruit teas, served with fragrant flower petals, while you relax on the terrace and watch the boats go by.
