Balatonfured

Holidays to Lake Balaton take you to central Europe’s largest lake, in Hungary. Known as the Hungarian Sea, the region’s southern shore is geared toward families in Siófok, while the northern shore’s home to Balatonfüred. Highlights include the baroque mansions of Tihany and traditional street food like lángos.

Hungary’s sea

Glance at a map of Hungary and you can’t miss the splash of blue in its western corner. Lake Balaton measures over 80km from end to end, making it central Europe’s largest lake. And when you stand by the water’s edge, it’s easy to see why locals call it the ‘Hungarian Sea’. It has heaps of holiday highlights to match its super-sized status too. Elegant 19th-century buildings are dotted around the lakeside towns that brim with bars, restaurants and busker-lined promenades. And then there’s the foodie scene which is bound to have you coming back for seconds.

Holiday your way

If flicking out your towel for some lakeside lounging is your holiday vibe, then Lake Balaton has a bevy of beaches to tempt you. There’s a mix of sandy spots and grassy lidos, and lots come loaded with extras like slides, sunbeds and playparks for the kids. Out on the lake, watersports take centre stage, with stand-up paddle-boarding, pedalo-ing and kayaking all on the cards. And local ferries make it easy to hop between different spots along the shore – from Balatonfüred with its baroque mansions and flower-dotted prom to Tihany where lavender fields turn the hillsides purple each summer.

Tasty treats

This is prime grape-growing country and white wines are the speciality. Don’t miss the crisp, citrussy kinds – they’re just the ticket to pep up your spritz cocktail. As well as helping the vino scene thrive, the balmy weather also means that local farmers can grow all kinds of things. Visit farmhouse-style restaurants to fill up on deliciously simple fare, from colourful salads and pick-and-mix platters to filling stews. And when you’re out and about, look out for Hungary’s favourite street food, Lángos. Nowhere does this tasty combo of fried bread, sour cream and cheese better than here.

Beaches

Take your pick

There’s no shortage of swim spots here. Over 20 beaches dot the edges of the lake, with lots lined up along the southern shore to catch the sunshine. Most are facility-filled, packing in things like parasols, sun loungers and restaurants to set you up for a day of lakeside lounging. And thanks to its mostly shallow depths, the water heats up to a very swim-friendly 23-28°C during the summer.

Perfect for a paddling

With shores that slope gently into the water, the southern side of the lake is perfect for little paddlers. In fact, the water never gets more than knee deep in lots of spots. One of the best kid-friendly picks is the pay-to-use beach in Siófok. This 670m stretch of shoreline packs in family fun with its big play area and sand pit, as well as stand-up paddle-boards and pedalos which you can hire for small fee.

Shopping

Bargain buys

The covered market in Balatonfüred is a great place for a potter. During the week, you can get a true taste of the region by browsing stalls laden with local produce, from fresh fruit and veg to jams, honey and baked goodies. And on Saturdays you can head here to pick up a second-hand steal or some local crafts from the weekly flea market.

Mid-range buys

Most towns around Lake Balaton have a souvenir shop or two. In Siófok, you’ll find lots of places around the main square and down on the waterfront, while in Balatonfüred, the streets by the marina are your best. Looking for something traditional to take home? You can’t go wrong with some embroidery or painted ceramics.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

A stroll along the flower-lined Tagore promenade is just the thing if you want to see the day out in leisurely fashion. From here, you can carry on towards the yacht club, where you can sip your favourite tipple while you watch the boats bob in the water.

Lively evenings

Siófok serves up plenty of action later in the day. If you’re after the liveliest scene, check out the bars lining the Petofi promenade by the waterfront – particularly the ones overlooking the beach. Most places stay open until late, with colourful neon lights and DJs to keep everyone in the party mood all night long.
