Caretta's Nest

We returned for our 5th visit this year and all was exactly as expected. We had booked early and got a car included but there were those who booked later who did not get a car. A car is absolutely essential at this location and I was amazed to discover Tui had temporarily removed the included hire car. I believe this has been rectified for next year, we have already booked and a car is included. The location is perfect if you are looking for a peaceful, laid back holiday. The accommodation units are spacious but a little tired and in need of updating. However this has been commented by other guests and it does seem the owner is unwilling to spend the money. Jobert keeps everywhere clean and provides fresh linen every couple of days. He works very hard. There are sunbeds on the beach that until last year were free. Last year we paid 5 euros per day and this year it was 7.50 or 9 euros depending on whether you had a mattress or not. The taverna next door owns the sunbeds, has a beach bar and an eatery a climb up from there. It is worth a visit. There is no longer a welcome pack provided and a trip to the supermarket in Skala (5 min drive) is the first thing needed. We travel from Gatwick and arrive at lunchtime but if your flight does not land until late you will be arriving with no provisions, not even water. All in all Carettas keeps drawing us back year after year but if you are looking for top spec accommodation with amenities close by then it is not for you.

Absolutely fabulous, far exceeded our expectations, and we are a bit picky! Quiet location, maybe a bit off the beaten track for some, but if you're looking for peace and quiet in wonderful surroundings, with a beautiful pool, but also really close to a beach this is it!!, Only 10 mins drive to 2 villages with loads of tavernas. Apartments are kept beautifully clean and well equipped, for low key self catering by caretaker Jo-bert who is sooo efficient but no way intrusive. Many guests have been going here for years, and one 5 year returner asked if there was still a crack in the shower tray in our flat. On checking yep, there was a hair line crack but If that's the worst I could find I think I am on a winner!! and why do they go back??? To add to all this there is a brilliant taverna next door, but don't worry not in the least noisy, and family run and so friendly. If you have mobility probs although it is up hill you can drive and park at the back, So minuses, it is up hill to the apartments, and the shower trays are only a size 10/12 ladies!!, the wet shower curtains mean you pray you don't drop the soap, but that taken into account we have already booked for next year. Good luck getting in!!!

If you look at my profile you will see i stay here once a year - apmost evey year since it was built. I am not going to swing a lamp for the past - those of us who were lucky enough to dicover here in early days have great memeries - but this is TripAdvisor and is a snap shot of now. In previous years a hire was included in deal - TUI this year removed that ( we booked early so got one but procced eith caution ) - so if you have to book a car that bumps up the package price and you may do better to condider other options. If you arrive by taxi transfer - be aware there is NO welcome pack, not even a bottle of water and nearest shop is a fair bit away. Accomodation - the origibal decoration is around 12/15 years old - it looks ok ( if you dont look too closely ) / furniture was quality back then and has lasted well / as was cutlery ahd crockery - you get the picture - not much investment - but it is fine. There is no wi-fi / Ltd mobile signal / no TV - all part of the charm to those of us who love the place - but be aware of this before you book. Joberg cleans / gardens / tries his best in all he does - he is a star. Swimming pool is loveley / the heach and sea just feet away - so for most a perfect holiday location. Thus the title of this review - it is a one off location - but you need to be aware of its limitations - and this year sort out your own hire car - you will need one. Will we be back - yep of course we will !
