Best city breaks

Uncover the best spots for a city break in Europe and beyond.
We’ve uncovered the best spots to take off to on a city break, including what to see while you’re there and where to stay. Paris and Amsterdam are top spots for a city break close to home, but if you’re up for flying a little further, a short break to New York should be on your radar. The best bit? TUI city breaks offer so much choice, so planning a break that works for you is easy. Our handpicked hotels are all within easy reach of the city’s top sights, and you can find flight times to suit your schedule thanks to a range of flexible flying options.

New York, USA

If you’ve never experienced the Big Apple before, you need to. Exploring this epic city is like stepping onto a film set, with iconic sights around every corner. There isn’t a bad time to visit, either. Head there in November to join in the Thanksgiving celebrations, visit in January or February for cheap Broadway show tickets, or taste your way around New York in July, when restaurant reservations are easy to come by. For the ultimate Big Apple getaway, though, visit in December, when the entire city wears a jacket of Christmas lights. If you ask us, there’s no better way to get into the festive spirit.

Hotel pick – Stay at the RIU Plaza New York Times Square to be within walking distance of Central Park, Times Square and The Empire State Building. It’s a great option for families, thanks to rooms that fit up to five people.

Las Vegas, USA

Name a strip more iconic than the one in Las Vegas? We’re not sure there’s any competition. This four-mile stretch lines up iconic hotels and casinos, malls and must-sees like the Fountains of Bellagio. As everything is so compact, it makes it perfect for a short break – you can easily tick off most parts of the strip across four days. If you’re visiting for a little longer, pencil in a trip across to the desert to snap the Grand Canyon – you can reach the West Rim in around two and a half hours.

Hotel pick – Luxor Hotel & Casino puts you at the centre of the strip, so all of the city’s best bits within easy walking distance. When you’re not our exploring, four pools, 11 restaurants and a casino are on hand to keep you busy.

Kraków, Poland

At only a two and a half hour flight from London, Poland’s Kraków is perfect for a short city break. That’s not the only thing it’s got going for it, though – it’s one of the cheapest cities on this list. Around 10 euros will stretch to a meal and a drink if you find the right spot. Spoiler: you’ll find the cheapest places off the town’s main square. Once you’ve ticked off everything you want to see in town, you can take a daytrip to pay your respects at Auschwitz-Birkenau – it’s around a 90-minute drive from the centre.

Hotel pick – Grand Ascot Hotel comes with a buffet restaurant, so you can stock up on breakfast before heading out for the day. It’s only a five-minute walk from the main square, so ticking off everything on your sightseeing list is easy.

Rome, Italy

Italy is a dreamy location for a romantic getaway for two – whether it’s your first city break together or for a wedding anniversary that’s famous for gold gifts. The country’s capital, Rome, hosts some of Europe’s most iconic sights – you’ve got the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain for starters. Plus, you can tick off another country from your list while you’re here. The Vatican City, AKA the smallest sovereign nation-state in the world, is set in the heart of Rome. Head here to visit the Sistine Chapel, home to Michelangelo’s Renaissance fresco.

Hotel pick – Level up your city break at NH Roma Villa Carpegna. Its postcode puts you inside a private park, a 40-minute stroll or 10-minute taxi ride to the centre of the city. A pool paired with sunloungers is on hand if you fancy slowing down the pace for a day or two.

Berlin, Germany

It’s safe to say Berlin wears its history on its sleeve, from the remnants of the Berlin Wall to Checkpoint Charlie – the former crossing point between the eastern and western sides of the city. It’s also home to some of Europe’s best nightlife, so it’s a perfect pick if you fancy pairing sightseeing with big nights out. Door policies are often strict, so check the vibe of the bar or club you’re planning to go to before you head out.

Hotel pick – Like shopping? You’ll love Hotel Riu Plaza Berlin. It’s pitched a five-minute walk from the country’s biggest department store and another five minutes to its top shopping street, AKA the Kurfürstendamm.

Paris, France

A trip to France’s capital feels like you’ve stepped onto a film set with so many iconic sights to see. Fill your days in Paris with museum visits and shopping trips to classy boutiques. Stop off for macarons along the Champs Élysées, before heading to the Arc de Triomphe and the world-famous Eiffel Tower. Climbing to the top is optional, but we reckon it’s worth doing, even if it’s only so you can share a pic on your socials.

Hotel pick – The Elysees Union sits between two of the city’s most iconic landmarks – it’s a 10-minute walk in either direction to the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is a city of two halves. No, literally. It spreads out either side of the River Danube. On the west bank, Buda’s home to some of the city’s most iconic landmarks – yep, Buda Castle is one of them. Across the water, the eastern bank plays host to Pest. Things are a lot livelier on this side, with ruin bars and buzzing cafés dominating the map.

Hotel pick – EST Grand Savoy puts you a few minutes’ walk from a metro station, so getting around is easy. When you’re back at base, a rooftop bar pairs classic cocktails with views of the city’s skyline.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is one of the most compact cities on this list. It’s a good option if you’re low on annual leave as you can tick off lots in just a couple of days. Pitch yourself close to the Old Town Square and you’ll never be more than a 20-minute walk from the city’s best bits. You can see the Astronomical Clock, the National Museum and St Nicholas Cathedral before lunch, giving you plenty of time to taste the beers the city is famous for. The best bit? You’ll probably pay half the price of a pint in the UK.

Hotel pick – Make a base at the budget-friendly Plaza Prague Hotel and you can hop on a metro and be in town in ten minutes. A buffet restaurant covers breakfast each morning, so you can fill up before heading out to explore.
