Where to book for October half term?

Half term getaway, anyone? Find out where to go for October half term.

October half term is the perfect time to head off on a family break somewhere warm before Christmas. The best bit? You don’t have to travel very far to get some sun. We've picked a few spots in Europe and Asia that stay warm well into October, so you can soak up some sunshine without taking the kids on a long flight.

Tenerife, Canary Islands

Tenerife’s a great family destination thanks to its warm weather and child-friendly activities. Plus, it's only around a four-hour flight from the UK. The Canaries are famous for their year-round warm weather, and autumn is no exception – the mercury sits in the high 20s in October, so beach days with the kids are always an option. Costa Adeje is a top choice for family holidays, all thanks to great beaches and a list of family-friendly bars and restaurants. Siam Park waterpark is just up the road, too. Plus, nearby Teide National Park offers activities like mountain biking and stargazing for older children.

Skiathos, Greece

If you’re looking for a Greek Island with loads of choice when it comes to beaches, head to Skiathos. It’s one of the smaller spots in Greece’s clutch of islands and has over 60 stretches of sand to choose from. When you've finished building sandcastles, you can head off to see the island on horseback, or hop on a ferry to nearby Skopelos.

Khao Lak, Thailand

Planning a long-haul trip? Put Thailand on your radar. From floating markets to Buddhist temples, this slice of south-east Asia is packed with things to see and do for all ages. Family-friendly Khao Lak has some of the quietest beaches – including Thai Muang, where turtles lay their eggs – so it’s a good choice for a family break. Factor in plenty of snorkelling, diving and hiking opportunities, and it’s a great option for older kids and teens. Weather-wise, October is the end of the rainy season – so while you can expect some rain, it’s usually short-lived and paired with average temperatures around 28°C.

Menorca, The Balearic Islands

Much quieter than the nearby islands of Majorca and Ibiza, Menorca dials down the Balearics’ party atmosphere and offers a relaxed retreat for families. The shallow beaches serve up great paddling spots for young children, while older kids can try their hand at scuba diving off the coast. Plus, entertainment complex Castillo Menorca is a great place for the kids to burn off energy on trampolines, zip wires and climbing frames.

Paphos, Cyprus

Head to Cyprus in October for plenty of family activities and average temps of 28 degrees – ideal for beach days spent paddling and sandcastle building. Make a beeline for Paphos, where you’ll find a few honey-hued stretches of sand, along with ancient sites and a modern harbour lined with family-friendly restaurants. If you’re looking for an action-packed day out, Paphos Aphrodite Waterpark lines up high-speed slides, a wave pool and water rafting.

Mellieha Bay, Malta

It may be small, but Malta gets a big thumbs up for a family holiday. Plus, in October it’s still pleasantly sunny and the ocean’s warm enough for a dip. Perched on a hilltop in northern Malta, chilled-out Mellieha Bay is a great spot for families. Its large, sandy beach has shallow waters for children to splash around in, plus watersports like canoeing and paddleboarding are on hand for older kids.
