Turkey

Think Turkey, think sandy beaches and secluded coves, but this hotspot has plenty more strings to its bow. We’re talking everything from spice-laden bazaars to ancient temples. Pick Dalaman, for example, and discover the famous Blue Lagoon. Then there’s livelier Bodrum – home to heaps of history. Or, choose the upmarket resort of Antalya, which is tucked into Turkey’s scenic southwest corner.

Cape Verde

Year-round sunshine and plenty of sand to kick back on? Cape Verde’s twin islands offer both in spades. Sal is the more popular of the two – lots of travellers make tracks for seaside Santa Maria, with its eight-kilometre beach and café-lined square. Over on Boa Vista – which translates to ‘beautiful view’ – you won’t find a shortage of sand, either. The whole island’s ringed with the stuff – 55 kilometres of it.

Egypt

Grab your snorkel, swimming costume and sun cream – holidays to Egypt serve up kaleidoscopic coral reefs, World War II wrecks and dozens of white-sand beaches. Sharm El Sheikh’s sands, for example, unfurl for 60 kilometres along the coast. Or, pick Hurghada, and one of its secluded hotels along the shoreline. Meanwhile, Marsa Alam flaunts a 70-metre-high coral wall that’s home to giant turtles.

Greece

Lots of Greece’s islands are ready and waiting for holidaymakers. The country’s biggest names – like Crete, Corfu, Kos, Zante, Santorini and Rhodes – each have their own individual charms, but all of them deliver on the beach front. If you’re after somewhere off the beaten track, the likes of Kefalonia, Skiathos, Preveza and Parga are on the case.

Tunisia

Sandy beaches might be the headliners in Tunisia, but its shopping scene deserves an honourable mention, too. Seek out a souk to hone your haggling skills, or weave through a bustling market to bag a bargain. Or, head inland to see the Sahara Desert, where silk-soft dunes ripple as far as the eye can see. You can add a stop at an ancient monument like El Jem to your agenda, too – this Roman theatre was one of the largest ever built.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands top the charts for lots of holidaymakers, and it’s no wonder why. These islands were formed as part of an ancient volcanic eruption, which has left its mark – in the best way – on the landscape. Lanzarote’s Timanfaya National Park is a must-visit, while on Tenerife, Mount Teide is stellar for stargazing. Plus, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria’s semi-desert beaches offer up plenty of sunbathing space. For a more sedate pace, pick pretty La Palma.

Cyprus

Cyprus is known as the island of love, and it’s captured the hearts of thousands of holidaymakers over the years. We reckon that might have something to do with its necklace of Blue Flag beaches – 64 of them, to be precise – and its endless historical sites. Plus, the temperatures during summer hover in the low 30s, so you’re all set for sunbathing.

Iceland

Iceland is unlike any other holiday destination. Its scenery game is unmatched – more waterfalls than you could count, cloud-brushing glaciers, flocks of puffins – it’s all in Iceland’s locker. Plus, visit during the summer, and you’ll be treated to almost unending daylight, so there’s no limit to how much you can explore. Reykjavik’s city sights hold their own, too – Iceland’s capital boasts a great foodie scene and lots of bars.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast is spread with butter-coloured sand, making it the perfect place to pick. Whether you choose a hotel in Sunny Beach or Golden Sands, the coastline’s in the spotlight. Plus, Bulgaria lines up its fair share of historical hotspots. We’re talking Roman-era ruins, UNESCO-ticked towns and ancient fortresses carved into cliff faces.

Croatia

1,185 islands float off the shores of Croatia’s mainland, so it’s no wonder that this Eastern European gem is popular with island hoppers. Whether you choose to base yourself in terracotta-topped Dubrovnik, or cast off to an iconic islet like Brac, you’ll find yourself reaching for your camera. Dip beneath the clear-as-glass Adriatic Sea, and you’ll see that the underwater sights are just as captivating.

Morocco

Morocco’s made for beach breaks with a twist. Agadir’s sand-carpeted coast is offset by the culture-crammed city of Marrakech – complete with colourful souks – and the dunes of the Sahara Desert, too. Or, you can choose to base yourself in Taghazout. This up-and-coming former fishing village deals in authentic Moroccan break breaks.

Lapland

Santa, husky sled rides and the famous Northern Lights? It must be a holiday to Lapland. This winter favourite in northernmost Finland is set deep inside the Arctic Circle, so you can expect snow-covered forests, cosy log cabins and plenty of wild reindeer. Plus, if you’re short on time, you can tick off the country’s best bits in under 24 hours, thanks to our daytrip itineraries. Flights from London only take about three and a half hours.

Malta

For a small island, Malta delivers big on the holiday front. Its capital city, Valletta, has bagged UNESCO-listed status, thanks to the likes of 16th-century St John’s Cathedral and its grand palazzo. Its coastline is worth shouting about, too. It’s a pick ‘n’ mix of rocky coves carved out of cliff faces, and crescent moon-shaped sweeps of sand.
