Where's hot in March?

Searching for March sunshine? Here's where to go.
March might signal the start of spring, but let’s be honest, the warmth of summer’s still pretty far away. So, if you can’t wait another couple of months for some sunshine, you’re in the right place. Read on to find out why Barbados, Mexico and Tenerife are our favourite destinations for holidays in March. Spoiler alert: it’s got a lot to do with their toasty temperatures.

Then, take a look at our March deals to bag your break.

Barbados

Barbados is known for its celeb guests. We all love some springtime sun, right? And, if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us. Unravel your towel on the west of the island – AKA the Platinum Coast – and you can soak up the sun on 92 kilometres of beach. If you’re staying on the south coast, you need to check out Crane Beach. It boasts rose-tinted sand and is one of the island’s best beaches. Once you’ve dusted the sand off, head over to the capital, Bridgetown, where you can dance to live reggae, sample rum at a local distillery, or watch a game of cricket at the Kensington Oval. Still need convincing? March is the month that brings the most hours of sunshine to Barbados, so you’ve got 10 hours to top up your tan.

Egypt

Stingrays, crocodile fish and tonnes of colourful coral reefs secure Egypt’s status as a top snorkelling spot, while average March temperatures of 23°C confirm its place on this list. Not sure where to stay? Pick Hurghada and you’ll be around a 20-minute drive from the Sahara Desert – 4x4 safari tours are a must-do when you stay here. Sharm El Sheikh‘s famous for its snorkelling scene, and it often sees some of the country’s highest temperatures, too. Meanwhile, Marsa Alam’s probably best known for its beaches, with more than 50 kilometres of sand to its name. Top tip: things tend to get a little cooler after dark, so it’s worth packing layers for the evenings.

The Gambia

On the search for toasty temps but don’t fancy a long flight? Introducing… The Gambia. This place sits on Africa’s west coast, just south of the Canary Islands, and is only around a five-and-a-half-hour flight from the UK. It’s a perfect pick for spring getaways – March and April are the country’s hottest months, so it’s a great time to go if you need to top up your vitamin D. Temps in the mid-thirties in March? We’ll take it. The River Gambia National Park should be on your to-do list while you’re there – it’s made up of a group of islands roamed by chimpanzees. You can spot them swinging from the trees on a boat tour around the park.

Mexico

The Caribbean’s a go-to for warm weather at any time of the year, but you can expect less rainfall when you visit outside of the summer months. Cancun’s hotel zone is the place to be for big nights out, with a list of lively bars including iconic spots like Coco Bongo Cancun. That’s not the only thing it’s got up its sleeve though – it’s also got 22 kilometres of sand under its belt, so you’re sorted for post night-out snoozes the next day. For something a little slower, Riviera Maya should be on your radar. It’s home to one of the world’s biggest coral reefs and a series of eco parks with underground caves – called cenotes – to explore.

Tenerife

The Canary Islands are another great pick if you’re after somewhere hot in March without a long flight, and Tenerife’s one of the warmest islands out of the bunch. The island’s south coast is home to a trio of top towns – Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje. They’re all linked together by the Geranium Walk which stretches along the shoreline for almost 10 kilometres – it’s fairly flat all the way along, so it’s perfect for seafront strolls. Over on the island’s west coast, Playa de la Arena slows down the pace a little, with a collection of cute restaurants and bars lined up along its black-sand beaches.
