MAKARSKA
An hour and a half drive from the well-known city of Split, and just a hop across the water from the island of Hvar, is where you’ll find an unsung slice of seaside called Makarska. This place is known for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Those in the centre of town are dotted with bars and restaurants and are perfect for romantic meals over a sunset by the sea popular with families. Look out for spots serving fresh seafood like traditional Croatian cuttlefish risotto. Head off-the-beaten-track, though, and venture along the coast towards Brela, and it won’t take you long to find a pocket-sized cove that you can have pretty much all to yourselves.

KOLOCEP
The balance between active and relaxed is just right on the island of Kolocep. With a population of only 100 people, and zero cars, it’s so blissfully quiet that you can hear the sound of the waves lapping the silver, pebbly beach at any time of day. That said, Dubrovnik – which is teeming with sights, shops and bars – is only a half an hour ferry ride away. So it’s easy to pop across the water if you want to shop for freshly made lavender soaps at the market, check out the views from the top of Dubrovnik’s fortress walls, or whizz up the mountainside in the cable car.

PULA
You’ll find this patch of Croatia in the north of the country, where Italy is within day tripping distance. You can take a boat trip across the Adriatic to Venice, or drive up the coast to Prosecco – where the legendary bubbly stuff comes from.
