Best hotels in Florida

Whether theme parks, beaches, city sights or wildlife havens are top of your to-do list in Florida, these hotels will make the perfect base.
Florida’s best hotels are spread all the way across this does-it-all US state. First and foremost, Orlando lines up no end of properties that put you within reach of the biggest and best theme parks – but it’s not the only location worth looking at for your Florida trip.

Davenport, for example, also makes a great base if theme parks are on your list, and the same goes for Lake Buena Vista. And Melbourne Beach has claimed a prime slice of Florida’s Space Coast – so you can pay a visit to the Kennedy Space Center.

Miami, meanwhile, ticks both the beach and city break boxes for a best-of-both escape. Can’t decide? Have a read of our favourite picks and find your Florida hotel.

Bahama Bay Resort & Spa, Davenport

This resort-style hotel in Davenport is laid out like a village in 70 acres of gardens, so it has a real community feel to it. You’ve got a choice of two or three-bed apartments, which sleep five or seven, and each one comes with a kitchen to rustle up meals and a lounge for chilling out.

Wander through the leafy grounds and you’ll find four pools, a spa and a manmade beach – plus lots in the way of sports and activities. That includes basketball, beach volleyball and tennis courts, plus a games room and playground for kids. As for location, Davenport is a 15-minute drive from Walt Disney World Resort, and half an hour from both Universal Orlando® Resort and International Drive – so theme parks are well and truly covered.

The Grove Resort and Waterpark Orlando, Kissimmee

As you’ve probably guessed from the name, the waterpark at this hotel in Kissimmee is one of its biggest talking points. It packs in a winding lazy river, double-storey slides, a surf simulator and a swimming pool, plus kids have a smaller pool with a couple of slides to themselves. There are more pools scattered around the resort, including an infinity number.

There’s a really good spread when it comes to dining, from big buffets at Valencia’s to American favourites at Longboard Bar & Grill. Contemporary apartments come with a kitchen and lounge area, and some have scenic views of next-door Lake Austin. Want a closer look? Wander down to the pier and you’ll find boats, kayaks and guided pontoon tours setting off from here.

Riu Plaza Miami Beach, Miami

Set your sights on Miami? Look no further than Riu Plaza Miami Beach. It’s on Miami’s famous boardwalk, so you’ve got plenty of places to eat and drink on the doorstep, and a legendary stretch of sand and sea just footsteps away. Plus, the historic Art Deco district is only a 20-minute walk.

The outdoor pool will do a good job of keeping you at the hotel, though – it’s a big, curvy number surrounded by palm trees, sun loungers and smart lawns. There’s a poolside snack bar serving light bites like sandwiches and salads, and a main restaurant where you can fill up on big buffet breakfasts – eaten in the sunshine on the al fresco terrace.

Hyatt Place Melbourne Palm Bay, Melbourne Beach

This hotel scores points for location. It’s close to the River Lakes Conservation Area – where you can set off on a hike or take an airboat ride – and a 20-minute drive from Melbourne Beach. If the Kennedy Space Center is on your wish-list while you’re in Florida, that’s a day-trippable hour’s drive away.

There are lots of shops, bars and restaurants closer to home, and the hotel has a handy 24-hour snack bar – The Market – where you can get food and drink to go. Rooms are simple and smart, and the pool is a small, peaceful spot wrapped in a paved terrace, with a handful of loungers and parasols.

Lake Buena Vista Village Resort, Lake Buena Vista

This hotel is a 10-minute drive away from Walt Disney World Resort, 20 minutes from SeaWorld Orlando and 25 minutes from Universal Studios. And the best news is, the hotel runs a shuttle bus to all three. It’s also a five-minute walk from the Lake Buena Vista Factory Outlet Stores, so you can splurge at the Nike and Gap factory shops.

When you’re not out and about, there’s plenty going on back at base – most of which revolves around the pirate-themed pool. With a huge replica shipwreck, fountains, slides and water cannons, this is an all-action spot complete with a bar for drinks and snacks. And when you want to change the pace, there’s a second, lake-style pool that’s much more relaxed.
