An hour and a half down the road from the well-known city of Split, and just a hop across the water from the island of Hvar, is where you’ll find the unsung slice of seaside called Makarska. This place is known for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Those in the centre of town are dotted with bars and restaurants, and are popular with families. Head off the beaten track, though, and venture along the coast towards Brela, and it won’t take you long to find a pocket-sized cove that you can have pretty much all to yourself.
STAY: The adults-only, seafront Sensimar Makarska is an ideal base for exploring this particularly stunning part of Croatia’s coastline. It looks out over a view of never-ending blue from its seafront perch – one of the best places to soak up the vistas is from the infinity pool Sensimar Adriatic Beach – with its knockout sea views and mojito bar – is close by, too.
DINE: The More Restaurant is just a minute’s walk from Sensimar Makarska. It’s our pick for delicious king prawns, mussels and traditional Croatian cuttlefish risotto. And you’ll be able to see right to the bottom of the seabed, thanks to the diamond-clear waters, from your table. There’s a huge selection of wines to choose from, too.
The balance between active and relaxed is just right on the island of Koločep. With a population of only 100 people, and zero cars, it’s so blissfully quiet that you can hear the sound of the waves lapping the silver, pebbly beach at any time of day. That said, Dubrovnik – which is teeming with sights, shops and bars – is only a half an hour ferry ride away. So it’s easy to pop across the water if you want to shop for freshly made lavender soaps at the market, check out the views from the top of Dubrovnik’s fortress walls, or whizz up the mountainside in the cable car. Watch our video to see more of what Dubrovnik has in store.
STAY: The just-for-grown-ups Sensimar Kalamota Island Resort is Koločep’s only hotel. It’s sleek and modern from top to toe, and its pool, restaurant and bar all face the long, pebbly beach, which is only a matter of footsteps away.
DINE: Five minutes’ walk along the seafront is where you’ll find the hotel’s Culinarium restaurant. Along with a menu that lists seafood fettuccine, fillet of seabass and steak with peppercorn sauce, it offers themed nights – including an evening where you can pair your meal with wine, and a dinner where the entire restaurant is filled with candles. You’ll find a Culinarium restaurant at all of our Sensimar hotels.
You’ll find this patch of Croatia in the north of the country, where Italy is within day tripping distance. You can take a boat trip across the Adriatic to Venice, or drive up the coast to Prosecco – where the legendary bubbly stuff comes from. Italian influences are all around in Pula – most notably in the centre of the city, where an ancient Roman amphitheatre takes pride of place. Aside from that, you can expect yacht-dotted harbours, cosy restaurants, and over a hundred miles’ worth of pretty, pebbly beaches to explore hand-in-hand.
STAY: The adults-only Sensimar Medulin is close to both the beach and the town centre, so exploring everything Pula has to offer is easy from here. When you’re staying put, you can relax around the curvy pool, book yourself in for a spa treatment, or sign up for wine tasting sessions.
DINE: In Pula, Bistro Torta gets our vote. It’s perched on the edge of the harbour, so you’ll have top-notch views of both the yachts bobbing on the sparkly, blue waters and Pula’s remarkably well-preserved amphitheatre. As for the menu, expect just-hooked fish, big platters of prawns, and hearty steaks.
The adults-only TUI SENSIMAR Adriatic Beach is set at the foot of a pine-covered mountain, on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast.
TUI SENSIMAR Makarska has more than one string to its bow, including sea views, a beachfront location and an infinity pool.
With a seafront spot on a pin drop-peaceful island, TUI SENSIMAR Kalamota Island Resort is as chilled out as it gets.
