Holidays to Phuket offer everything from sleepy beaches to wired party resorts. And it's this little-bit-of-everything approach that makes the island one of Thailand's most popular destinations.
There are a lot of threads in Phuket’s tourism tapestry. The island is just off Thailand’s southwest coast and its capital, Phuket Town, is an animated city of early-morning markets and beeping tuk tuks. The shoreline, meanwhile, is home to a league of beaches – 40 kilometres’ worth to be exact. Some of the stretches of sand turn the tempo right down. All 11 kilometres of Mai Khao Beach are protected as part of the Sirinat National Park, so there are hardly any signs of life along its breadth.
Kamala Beach is another one that keeps itself to itself. The unspoilt sand here is accompanied by a village with Thai tradition at its heart. This is the place to come to learn local cookery or to experience an authentic Thai massage.
At the other end of the scale you’ve got Patong Beach. Like all good sandpits, this place was made for playtime – it’s just footsteps away from a directory’s worth of bars and restaurants. After sunset, the main strip is closed to vehicles, and human traffic fills the streets, making U-turns in and out of bars and discos.
The middle ground is occupied by Kata and Karon. On these beaches sunloungers are spread out in Goldilocks fashion – there’s just the right amount – and snorkelling is the main watersport on offer. The beach scene is complemented by sand-side promenades, quirky souvenir shops and lively restaurants.

What travel adapter do I need for Phuket?
When visiting Phuket, you'll need a two-pin European style plug adapter Type A or Type C. Most sockets accept both flat and round prongs. Type B is also used which has two-pins and one grounding pin. We recommend bringing at least one adapter, as UK-style plugs are not commonly found in hotels.
Where can I try local food in Phuket?
For authentic Phuket cuisine, we recommend exploring local markets like Banzaan Fresh Market or trying street food in Phuket Town. Many beachside restaurants also offer traditional dishes such as Moo Hong (braised pork belly) and Nam Prik Goong Siap (shrimp chilli paste).

Phuket's nightlife is lively and varied. Patong Beach is the centre of nighttime entertainment with numerous bars and clubs. For a more relaxed evening, you'll find beachfront bars in Kata and Karon, or enjoy live music in Phuket Town.
Where are the best places to shop in Phuket?
Phuket offers diverse shopping experiences. You'll find modern malls like Jungceylon in Patong for international brands. For local crafts and souvenirs, explore the weekend Naka Market or the charming Old Phuket Town.

Should I tip in Phuket?
Tipping isn't mandatory in Phuket, but it's appreciated for good service. In restaurants, a 10% tip is welcome if a service charge isn't included. For taxis, rounding up the fare is common practice.
Are there any local customs I should know about in Phuket?
When visiting Phuket, dress modestly at temples by covering shoulders, chest and knees with loose-fitting clothing, and remove shoes before entering. Locals may greet you with a "wai", a traditional Thai greeting where palms are pressed together at chest level with a slight bow, and the polite response is to return it with a smile. Seek permission before taking photos of people.
What should I pack for Phuket?
For Phuket, pack light, breathable clothing, beachwear for hotel pools and beaches, and comfortable walking shoes for exploring. Bring sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and insect repellent for the tropical climate. Include a light jacket for air-conditioned venues and clothing that covers shoulders and knees for visiting temples.
