Holidays to Surin Beach take you to Phuket’s bay-fringed west coast, where sugar-fine sands team up with glassy waters.
Top-tier beaches
The west coast of Phuket’s all about sea and sand, and when you see Surin Beach, you’ll understand why. The bay has a chalky texture, with soft waves lapping the shoreline and big, leafy palms giving your selfies a colourful backdrop. You could opt for a paddle – the water’s so clear you’ll see your feet in the seabed – or if you fancy a challenge, you could have a go at kayaking or surfing. A couple of restaurants are dotted along the kilometre-long stretch, too, serving all kinds of Thai favourites, from seafood specials to noodle dishes packed with vegetables.
Champagne lifestyle
If you drive down the coastline for just under 10 minutes, you’ll get to Kamala Beach. The town here used to be more like a sleepy fishing village, but these days it’s a little livelier – there’s a sprinkling of swish bars and restaurants to hop between, and a handful of shops where you can pick up souvenirs. Kamala Beach also marks the starting point of a swanky stretch of coastline nicknamed Millionaire’s Mile. It’s studded with celeb-style villas and clifftop gardens. Properties like these are only built on plots where the views are top-notch, so you can imagine how picturesque this part of the world is – think emerald-green rainforests and sea views for days.
Out and about in Phuket
If you want to see what Phuket’s all about outside of Surin Beach’s chilled-out bubble, you’re spoilt for choice for daytrip destinations. You’ve got Old Phuket Town about 40 minutes’ drive away, where you’ll find everything from busy nighttime markets to rooftop bars. There are a couple of spots you might recognise here from Leonardo DiCaprio’s movie, The Beach, too. For a totally different vibe, head for a traditional Buddhist temple. They’re scattered all about in Thailand, and one of them – Phra Thong Temple – is about half an hour’s drive away. It’s famous for its half-buried golden Buddha statue.
