You’ll find the Phi Phi Islands floating in the Andaman Sea, between Thailand’s west coast and the island of Phuket. Scenery-wise, this place is like a mishmash of Mauritius and Vietnam – it's loaded with ice-white beaches and bright-blue water, all with a backdrop of towering limestone cliffs and jungle-clad hills. On the main island – Phi Phi Don – a pair of bar-stocked villages top things off.

Hollywood famous

The Phi Phi Islands are mostly known for their starring role in the thriller film The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The majority of the movie was filmed on the archipelago’s second-biggest island, Phi Phi Leh. These days, you can book a tour of the island from Phi Phi Don. You can visit some of the spots that featured in the movie, including Maya Bay – it’s home to the film’s signature belt of sand.

A snorkelling hotspot

The waters around the Phi Phi Islands are gin-clear and teeming with wildlife, so it’s no surprise snorkellers and scuba divers flock here every year. One of the most popular places to throw on a mask and head into the blue is Shark’s Point, on Phi Phi Don. This reef-filled stretch of water is where you can swim with some of the Phi Phi Island’s biggest residents, like blacktip reef and leopard sharks – don’t worry, both species are really timid around humans.
