When to go?

Well, that depends entirely on what you’re after. If you’re a bit of a sunworshipper, then we recommend visiting between July and August – temperatures regularly hit 30°C and you can go for a dip in the sea without having to brace yourself for the cool water. If you’re travelling with small children, or prefer things a little milder, then June and September are perfect, with temperatures hovering in the low to mid-20s.

Best for beaches

If your holidays are all about beach days then Varna is the place to be. You’ll find sandy beaches, secluded coves, and steep cliffs. The largest beach that Varna has to offer sits at the mouths of the Kamchiya River. It unravels for over 13 kilometres and is 300 metres wide in places, so there’s plenty of space to spread out.

Best for exploring

Golden Sands does exactly what it says on the tin. Set in the Varna region, this town has a Blue Flag beach with – you guessed it – four kilometres of golden sand, as well as a host of luxury hotels. Plus, holidays here put you within easy reach of some of Bulgaria’s best attractions. You've got highlights like a monastery carved into a cliff, natural thermal springs and the country’s only desert to look forward to.

Best for relaxation

If you prefer a bit of peace and quiet on holiday, consider Obzor. This small seaside town has a sleepy feel and comes with a six-kilometre beach to doze on. While in the evenings, you can tuck into traditional Bulgarian dishes in laidback restaurants. If history is your thing, head to Nessebar where you can tick off the UNESCO-protected old town – it feels like you’ve travelled back in time. While over in the Kazakovs region – a short drive from Varna – you’ll find ancient sites like the Pobitite Kamani Rock Formations. It’s also known as the ‘Stone Forest’ thanks to the group of natural rock formations that cluster together like trees. Plus, you’ve got off-road safari routes if you want to explore off the beaten track.
