Tips for travelling with children

Uncover the top things to know when travelling with little ones.
From bringing your own pushchair to what baby-changing facilities to expect on board your flight, we’ve got you covered. Holidays come with plenty to remember – passports, boarding passes, your favourite swimwear – and when you’re travelling with kids, that list gets even longer. So, to make life easier, we’ve answered your top questions about travelling with little ones – let's dive in.

Once you’re up to speed, browse our family holiday deals.

1. How old does my baby have to be to fly?

For health and safety reasons, babies travelling with TUI must be over 14 days old.

2. Can I bring a pushchair and car seat with me?

Yep! If you’re flying with TUI Airways and need a pushchair or car seat, we’ll check it in it for free. If you’d like to take it on board with you, it needs a hand luggage label attached to it. It also needs to weigh less than 10kg and be no bigger than 55 x 40 x 20cm when folded. Just a heads up, it’ll count as one adult’s large piece of hand luggage on your booking.

You can keep your pushchair with you in the terminal and security, then hand it over at the gate – just let staff know at check-in and they’ll give you the relevant label to attach to it. It’ll travel in the hold with the rest of your checked-in luggage and you’ll pick it up at baggage claim. Psst! All pushchairs need to be fully collapsible to fit in the hold.

Flying with one of our trusted airline partners? Be sure to check their rules before you go – most will carry pushchairs or car seats at no extra cost.

3. Can I bring baby food in my hand luggage?

You can take both liquid and solid baby food in your hand luggage, plus powdered formula. When going through airport security, you may need to hand any baby food or milk to the staff – they’ll screen it separately.

Watch our guide on luggage allowance.

4. Are there baby-changing facilities on the plane?

All TUI Airways planes have baby changing facilities in the toilets on board – just check with cabin crew to find out where they are on your flight. If you’re travelling with one of our partner airlines, you’ll need to contact them directly for info about facilities on board.

5. Are there meals for children on the plane?

On long-haul flights – those that are seven hours or more – everyone aged two and over gets a free meal. You’re welcome to bring your own baby food and milk, too – and if you need a bottle warmed up, just let the cabin crew know.

6. Will my baby get their own seat and luggage on the plane?

Kids under two won’t be allocated their own seat and will need to sit on your lap for the flight. If you’ve booked a package holiday, they’ll get 10kg of checked-in luggage. Just a heads up, there’s no luggage included for flight-only bookings with infants – so you’ll need to add this on if you want it. Oh, and it’s also worth mentioning that only one child is allowed on the lap of each adult, too.

Kids over six months can sit in their own seat, but you’ll need to get in touch to buy an extra seat once you’ve booked your holiday. You’ll also need an approved car seat suitable for your child to sit in during the flight.

7. Will my baby get their own seat on the hotel transfer?

Children under two will need to sit on an adult’s lap. Just remember, only one child is allowed on the lap of each adult.

8. Will there be a cot in my hotel room?

You can pre-order cots and other baby equipment online before your family getaway to Holiday Villages, TUI BLUE, Sensatori by TUI BLUE hotels and most other hotels, too. Just a heads up – some hotels may charge for this.

Get more info on booking cots and other extras before you go.

9. What facilities can I expect in resort?

Each hotel offers something different. Some TUI BLUE hotels line up kids’ clubs for all ages, interactive sessions for parents and little ones and activities for teens. TUI BLUE hotels with the Family Fun highlight have a Baby Lounge with microwaves, changing tables and bottle warmers, and some offer a Baby & Tots Club for an extra charge. At mealtimes, kids get their own buffet section and there’s a spot for prepping baby food. Holiday Villages have the professionally-run HV Creche for little ones up to 35 months that you can pay a little extra for – it runs from May to October and is perfect for giving parents a little me-time.

10. Can I rent a pushchair at the hotel while I’m on holiday?

You can hire buggies at most hotels, but you’ll need to check with the hotel you’re staying at for more info.
