New York – inspired by Ghostbusters

The Big Apple’s no stranger to the big screen – The Avengers, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and King Kong have all found a home here. And, they’re not the only ones – the horror-meets-comedy classic Ghostbusters is based in New York, too. Remember the firehouse where Peter, Ray, Egon and Winston set up shop for their ghostbusting operations? Well, it’s still there – take a stroll along Moore Street in lower Manhattan and you’ll spot it at the intersection with Varick Street. If you’re lucky – and the real-life firefighters aren’t too busy – you can even head inside and grab some movie-inspired merch. Plus, in typical USA style, you can expect a list of parties and events in and around New York before and after the big day – The Village Halloween Parade should definitely be on your list on the 31st.

Egypt – inspired by The Mummy

From pharaoh tombs to the pyramids, The Mummy showcases a list of Egyptian icons. But – and we hope we’re not bursting your bubble here – it was actually mostly shot in Morrocco’s Marrakech. And – if that’s not too much to get your head around – the Chatham’s dockyards were used to portray the Port of Giza. Yes, we’re talking about the same Chatham that sits close to the coast in Kent. The secrets of cinema, eh? Anyway, if you want to check out real-life tombs and pyramids we’d recommend Egypt over England all day long. Don’t sweat the distance from Sharm El Sheikh to the likes of Luxor and Cairo – TUI experiences offer day trips that include return flights, so you can see Egypt’s best bits while making the most of its beach scene. Or, if you really want to get under the skin of Ancient Egypt, check out our Egypt River Cruises which come with a dedicated Egyptologist onboard.

Romania – inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Vampires are a great go-to for Halloween costumes without the hassle – throw on some fake teeth, put a bin liner over your shoulders and smudge some ketchup on either side of your lips and you’re good to go. But if you want to impress your pals with all the intel on one of the world’s most famous vampires, a city break to Romania could be just the ticket. The town of Transylvania is home to Bran Castle which inspired the story of Dracula, and sets the scene for Bran Stoker’s blockbuster. And, if you’re travelling from the capital – Bucharest – make a stop off in Brasov en route – it’s cloaked in legends of vampires and other Medieval stories which are set to make your spine tingle.
