Cologne

It’s not all about Christmas when you visit Cologne – this city brings charm and culture all year round. Sucker for history? Drop by Cologne Cathedral – a gothic masterpiece watching over the Rhine. It’s home to a soaring spire and the Shrine of the Three Kings.

Wind through the cobbled streets, and you’ll find old-style pubs and restaurants serving traditional dishes like Schnitzel and Bratwurst. Beer on the brain? Make a beeline for Früh am Dom – Germany's second-largest brewhouse.

Laidback afternoons are best spent north of the Rhine, pottering around the Belgian quarter and getting lost in bijoux boutiques, artisan eateries and old-time bookstores. Our pick? Head to Milchmädchen Bar for the best Belgian breakfast.

Montenegro

Lured by Montenegro’s beaches? We can’t blame you. But look up from your lounger, and you’ll find this Balkan beauty has loads more to offer.

Lost-in-time villages are a staple around the dolphin-shaped Lake Skadar, home to one of Europe’s top-notch bird spots. Scattered around it, you’ll find traditional stone houses and island monasteries mixed with grand Venetian churches and palaces – pretty cool if you ask us.

Swap big city thrills for bustling backstreets in the capital, Podgorica. There’s a medley of Ottoman-era and Austrian-style buildings and an energetic art and café culture to rival any other European city. Coffee, anyone?

Curacao

Meet the Caribbean Island with a twist. Curacao – pronounced “cure-a-sow” – is one-third of the trio known as the ABC Islands, lying north of the Venezuelan coast.

With candy-coloured colonial buildings, like something you’d see canal-side in Amsterdam, Willemstad’s is a feather in the island’s historical cap. Its hallmark is the Handelskade waterfront, a floating market where neighbouring Venezuelan vendors sell mangos, papayas, and plantain. Fancy a bite to eat? No problem. This place is packed with street-spilling cafés.

Oh, save room in your suitcase for sugary Dutch snacks like Stroopwafels – you’ll find them in souvenir shops along the cobbled streets.

Want to up the tempo? Christoffelpark is the perfect place. There are eight hiking trails here, one of which will take you up to Christoffel Mountain where – yep, you guessed it – the views are incredible. Add this to your list of things to do in Curacao, and you won’t be disappointed.

Sri Lanka

Don’t be fooled by Sri Lanka’s small size – this island packs a punch with its emerald jungles, towering temples and culture by the bucketload.

If landmarks are on your sightseeing list, you won’t be short of them here. Sigiriya Lion Rock, one of the country’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, stands 600 feet tall and hosts an ancient palace – impressive, right?

Tick off another best thing to do in Sri Lanka with a trip to Nuwara Eliya, known to the locals as The City of Light. Venture into the mist-draped mountains, and you’ll find tea plantations stretching for miles – and probably the best cuppa you’ll ever have.

Senegal

Senegal is the next big thing when it comes to holidaying in Africa, and it’s not hard to see why. From bustling, street food-filled cities like Dakar to calmer scenes in Saly, a trip here is well worth your annual leave.

Home to six (yes, six) national parks, you’ll find there’s no shortage of nature to explore. Take a boat tour through the Saloum Delta National Park. The winding saltwater canals and forest-backed wetlands are home to pelicans, herons and flamingos. Safari more your style? We’ve got you covered with a TUI Tour. Join one of our expert guides and get up close to rhinos, zebras and giraffes at the Bandia Wildlife Reserve.

Once a tiny settlement, Dakar’s bustling energy is unrivalled anywhere else in Senegal. Gaze down on the city’s rooftops from Africa’s tallest statue. Standing at 52 metres – and over one and a half times taller than America’s Statue of Liberty – the African Renaissance Monument is the perfect spot to snap a photo across the Cap Vert peninsula.
