Our pick of the best Twixmas holidays

Make the most of that gap between Christmas and New Year with our Twixmas picks.

When we say ‘Twixmas’, we don’t mean an annual holiday to celebrate the popular chocolate snack – we’re talking about that period of time between Christmas and New Year when you can jet off on holiday after all the festive fun (and food). You don’t have to go long haul either – you can book a post-Christmas holiday in close-to-home Spain or Cyprus, or head further afield to Cape Verde or Morocco.

So, whether you want to escape for a few days and be back in time for New Year’s Eve, or take a longer break, here are our top picks for Twixmas holidays…

CAPE VERDE

This archipelago of islands off the west coast of Africa boasts almost year-round sun, so it’s the perfect place to top up that faded summer tan. After tucking into your turkey, you can jet off to sunnier shores and enjoy endless strips of sand, culture-packed excursions, and high-octane adventures like cruising over sand dunes in a 4x4. Pick the palatial ClubHotel Riu Karamboa on Boa Vista island in Cape Verde as your base and you’ll enjoy spacious pools, speciality restaurants and activities like snorkelling, scuba diving and beach volleyball. This place also boasts an onsite spa, a Pacha nightclub for party animals and a karaoke bar, too. Book All Inclusive for two from £1560pp (with a £154pp discount) for a week leaving on the 29th of December.

CYPRUS

This close-to-home European hotspot is just a four-hour flight away and conveniently has year-round sunshine. Even in December, temperatures can reach the 20C mark, meaning you don’t need to head to tropical shores to get your sunshine fix. In Cyprus, you can also take your pick from big, bustling resorts like Paphos, where you’ve got ancient sites like Tombs of the Kings, and plenty of wine tasting tours. Or, head to the sleepy Nissi Beach to enjoy an escape-from-it-all break on the secluded sands. Snap up a Twixmas deal on the Mayfair Gardens Apartments in Paphos which is located in a quiet spot but just 10 minutes’ away from Paphos Town. You can take the family away from £455pp for four days to soak up some sun and be back in time for New Year’s Eve.

SPAIN

Spain is another top choice for a quick winter escape, being only two and a half hours away. You can take your pick from the classic Costas on the mainland, or head further afield to tick off TenerifeLanzarote or Gran Canaria. Best of all, because tourist season will be over, you’ll be able to make the most of the quiet beaches and restaurants to maximise your stay. Swap those Christmas TV specials for an on-set experience in Benidorm, where the popular ITV show of the same name is filmed. You can snap up a Twixmas deal at the Hotel Flamingo Oasis from £568 pp which flies out on the 26th of December and brings you back in time for New Year’s Eve. Here you can make the most of the perfect location which is right between the beach and the main town centre. There’s also an adults-only bar and onsite spa where you can indulge in some pampering treatments.

MOROCCO

Morocco is just a three and a half hour flight away and regularly hits highs of 20C in December, making it the ideal destination for a winter escape. It’s also within the same time zone as the UK, so you won’t even have to adjust – perfect. If you want to get your culture fix, make a beeline for Marrakech where there are spice stalls, a maze of souks and the famous Jamaa el Fna square to explore. Or, if beaches and relaxation are your thing, head to Agadir which basks in 300 days of sunshine a year and lines up a nine-kilometre beach. Pick the luxurious, adults-only TUI SENSIMAR Medina Gardens as your base to enjoy Jacuzzi® rooms, traditional Moroccan décor, and the perfect location in the heart of Marrakech. Snap up a Twixmas deal from £721pp for four nights, leaving on the 26th of December.
