How to spend a week in North Macedonia

From knockout natural beauty and delicious dishes to historical sites around every corner, North Macedonia is brimming with things to see, taste and do. Here are a few ways to spend your week exploring Lake Ohrid.

Views for days

• Overlooking the lake, the 13th-century Church of St John at Kaneo is one of the sights you’ve just got to see for yourself.

• Amble along the high stone walls of Tsar Samuel’s Fortress for photo opps of the water on one side and the historic little city of Ohrid on the other.

• Book a boat trip for 360-degree views of the town, mountains and Galičica National Park.

Heaps of history

•  Wind through the cobbled streets in Ohrid’s Old Town, filled with stone archways and rustic brown and white buildings.

•  Jump on a ferry to the Monastery of St Naum for one of North Macedonia’s must-have experiences. Visit St Naum’s tomb and spot peacocks in the gardens.

•  Step back in time at the Bay of Bones Museum, a replica of a Bronze Age village built on stilts over the water.

Local flavours

• Dip into waterfront restaurants to try some of the best dishes in North Macedonia, like selsko meso (a fragrant pork stew) and pastrmalija (a pizza-like flatbread).

• Take a seat in an authentic taverna to try the locally-made vranec wine or start a meal with a fiery glass of rakija, the country’s go-to spirit.

• Learn to make traditional dishes with a cooking class by the water, and find your new favourite tipple with some wine tasting.

Discover North Macedonia for yourself this summer on a holiday to Lake Ohrid.
