Lake Ohrid holidays

The Monastery of St Naum

Holidays to Lake Ohrid (pronounced Ock-rid) are all about exploring Europe’s oldest lake, learning about local history and tucking into tasty traditional food.

Europe’s oldest lake

Lake Ohrid’s got some pretty impressive credentials – it’s Europe’s oldest lake, dating back between 3 and 5 million years. It’s also North Macedonia’s largest, and the deepest in the Balkans too. It’s so big that at first glance you might mistake it for the sea, but it’s a fresh-water lake fed by underground springs that link it with the nearby Lake Prespa, just the other side of the national park. The water here is crystal clear, and it reaches temperatures of 27°C during the summer.

On the shore

It’s all about history around Lake Ohrid – visit centuries-old fortresses, churches and monasteries before tucking into local specialities at family-run kafeanas (taverns). In Ohrid, wander through cobbled streets full of vine-covered buildings, stone archways and shops selling traditional jewellery. Chill out on the beach, stroll along the promenade and visit lakefront restaurants, bars and cafés – some of them are even built over the water so you can have lunch with a front row seat of the lake.

On the water

One of the best ways to see the lake is to get out onto the water. You can swim from the shore or make a splash diving in from a pontoon – lots of the lake beaches have them. Rent a kayak to paddle out and explore for yourself or book a boat tour with a local guide who can show you around and point out all the best bits. And towards the southern end of the lake, the Monastery of St Naum and Bay of Bones Museum make for great day trips, and you can get there by boat.

Beaches

Chilled out beach days

There are lots of pebbly beaches around Lake Ohrid where you’ll get top-tier views of the lake and surrounding mountains. They’re mostly free to access, and you’ll need to arrive on foot to some of the more hidden ones like Potpesh and Kaneo. Near Ohrid’s Old Town, they're perfect for a chilled-out day by the lake, and the pretty beach by the Monastery of St Naum is also a must.

Beaches with a buzz

Hop on the ferry or take a taxi along to Gradište beach, one of the most popular beaches in North Macedonia. Backed by pine trees, it's got an upbeat vibe with music, pre-bookable sunbeds and cafés where you can pick up something tasty for lunch – so you're sorted for the day here. It's a great spot to cool off with a dip, and lots of people bring lilos to the lake too.

Shopping

Bargain buys

The Old Bazaar market in Ohrid is a great place to wander around. It's the only place in town that you can pick up the handmade clay pots that are used for cooking traditional stews – so if you've got your eyes on one, and room in your suitcase, it's worth a visit. There are clothes, shoes and accessories on offer too, and you can grab a bite to eat from one of the nearby food stalls as you wander. Locally, Monday is considered market day, but the stalls open every day. It's busiest from late morning to early afternoon, so it’s best to go first or last thing if you’re looking to avoid crowds.

Mid-range buys

Looking for something unique? Browse the shops in Ohrid's Old Town where you'll find filigree silver jewellery, woven together to look like silver lace. Or check out the region's famous Ohrid pearls – even Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth have worn them. They're special because they're hand painted with a secret ingredient passed through the generations of two local families, make sure to look out for the Talevi and Filevi shops to take a look.

Nightlife

Laid-back evenings

There are lakefront restaurants and traditional kafeanas (taverns) in most of the towns around Lake Ohrid, but you’ll find the most choice in Ohrid itself. Lots of them have terraces so you can dine al fresco and make the most of the long evenings. And there are ice-cream shops and bakeries open late too, so if you fancy something sweet there’s plenty of choice as you wander through the streets – look out for Chocolate Plus and Della Rosa.

Lively evenings

The centre of Ohrid’s your best bet for a livelier evening. Close to Ohrid’s Old Town, Liquid’s got a great view of the lake and has regular DJs and live music. The Harbour Club is a great spot to enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail on the terrace. And for a boogie on the dancefloor, go to Ambrosia and Havana Club – they’re both open ‘til late.
