Where to find the best natural spas in the world

Soak up the healing powers of the world's best natural spas.
Every day life can be pretty tiring, which is why when you’re on holiday you should be able to kick back and relax. Whether it’s relaxing in some of the world’s best pools, or enjoying some of Sensatori by TUI BLUE Resort’s tastiest cocktails, it’s your choice how you spend your time. But one of the ultimate ways to unwind while away is to enjoy a spa treatment. There’s no better excuse for jumping on a plane and heading to some of the world’s top spa destinations. From Iceland’s famous geothermal pools to Bulgaria’s mud baths, these DIY spas promise to melt your worries away and help with ailments like painful joints and skin troubles.

LAS SALINAS, COSTA BLANCA

This pink lake isn’t just super pretty, it has also been declared one of the healthiest lakes in Europe. So what makes it so great? Firstly, the high salt content is said to help ease painful joints, skin irritations and asthma. To get the most ideal treatment, rub the black mud – the oilier, the better – all over your body, avoiding your face. Leave it for about 30 minutes and then hop into the lake to wash it all off. The lake, which is free to visit, is also a brilliant opportunity to spot up to 2,000 flamingos, who match the pink hues of the water perfectly.

BLUE LAGOON, ICELAND

Iceland is famous for being fairly chilly. So when someone tells you to pack your swimming costume, you might think that's a bit unusual. But while stripping down to your bikini and swim shorts might not seem like the most natural thing to do when you’re surrounded by snow, it’ll be so worth it when you sink into the 35-40C waters of the Blue Lagoon. The toasty geothermal waters are rich in minerals like silica and sulphur, and many people have said taking a dip has helped alleviate their skin conditions, like psoriasis.

Once you’ve finished at the Blue Lagoon, you can fill up your itinerary with these things to do in Iceland.

SOUFRIERE VOLCANO, ST LUCIA

If your skin is after a little TLC, heading to the world’s only drive-through volcano should be top of your list. There are hot mineral pools filled with water which has been naturally heated by the volcanic rock for you to soak in, and mud baths which detoxify the body and help heal sunburn, eczema, arthritis and more. The experience will help make your skin smooth and tight, and leave you feeling rejuvenated. Plus you can feel like a star, with celebs like Richard Branson and Oprah having visited before.

PELEKAS BEACH, CORFU

Heading to the beach for a day of sun-seeking is already pretty relaxing, but Pelekas beach in Greece takes your R&R one step further. If you head just south of the main beach, you’ll find a cove full of natural clay. It’s said to have cooling and detoxifying properties, so smother it all over your face and body before rinsing it off in the sea.

LAKE POMORIE, BULGARIA

This lake in Bulgaria has another free DIY spa treatment for you to try. The locals swear by the mud here, saying it’ll cure just about anything. Apply the medicinal mud all over your body, and while it’s drying you can admire all the beautiful wild birds that flock to the lake. Once dry, take a dip and rinse it all off. And if you fancy soaking up some culture while you’re there too, head to the small museum which will teach you all about local salt production.

KLONG THOM HOT SPRINGS, KRABI

The hot springs in Krabi, Thailand, are ideal if hot tubs are your favourite spa treatment. Sit back and relax in bubbling water, which reaches 40˚C and contains mineral salts which are said to ease a number of skin ailments like sciatica and rheumatism. The water here comes from thermal springs, which originate underground and funnel up to fill potholes in volcanic rock.

And while you’re in Thailand, why not treat yourself to some retail therapy by heading to the best markets in Thailand.
