Best hotels in Malta

Wondering where to stay in Malta? These hotels should be top of your shortlist.
Considering its bijou size, the island of Malta packs in a lot of options when it comes to accommodation. Like your hotels on the high-end side? Stay in glamourous St Julian’s or Sliema, where properties come with infinity pools, spas and cocktail bars, plus locations all set up for exploring.

Here for some serious R&R instead? Stay within metres of the beach in low-key Mellieha Bay or go scuba diving in Qawra. And if you want to explore the island’s rich history, hone in on hotels in Valletta – Malta’s historic capital. The whole city is so storied it’s been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Malta Marriott Hotel & Spa

Malta Marriott Hotel & Spa puts you right in the heart of ritzy St Julian’s. It’s next to Balluta Bay, with a rare find on Malta – a sandy beach – and a bustling promenade next door. That means you’ve got shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance, and there’s a bus stop outside the hotel if you want to see what’s what a bit further out.

The rooftop pool is the main talking point at the hotel – it’s set on a smart terrace with palm trees and views across the bay. There are plenty more luxe touches, too, including a chic rooftop cocktail bar that’s open in the summer, and a Balinese-style spa with a heated indoor pool you can swim in all year round.

The Phoenicia Malta

The Phoenicia pulls out all the stops for a really special stay. The pool, for example, has an infinity edge so you can soak up the views of Valletta’s Marsamxett Harbour and city bastions, which once protected the capital. Plus, the whole place is wrapped in more than seven acres of neatly manicured gardens, so it feels like you’re staying in a huge, leafy oasis.

Food-wise, there’s a bar serving drinks and snacks by the pool, a Mediterranean restaurant with an al fresco veranda, and a lounge serving afternoon tea. And when you want to dine out, Valletta’s old town is a couple of minutes’ walk away – or Sliema is a ten-minute drive.

AX The Palace

Stylish Sliema is your oyster when you stay at AX The Palace, a grand hotel with an enviable spot. Swim in the rooftop infinity pool and you can see right across the resort and all the way out to sea. And down at street level there’s a seafront promenade, bars and restaurants all within a few minutes’ walk.

There’s a choice of places to eat here, although top marks go to the Asian restaurant, TemptAsian. It’s on the ninth floor, with wraparound views of Sliema and the Grand Harbour and a menu that fuses Asian and western dishes. The lounge bar on the pool deck is the perfect place for cocktails after a meal here in the summer months.

db Seabank Resort + Spa

Right opposite Malta’s biggest sandy beach, this hotel in Mellieha Bay is a popular pick with families. The pool line-up ticks off a huge lagoon-style affair, a separate adults-only pool with a swim-up bar, and a pirate-themed pool with slides for children. There’s a hotel-run kids’ club, mini-discos for little ones, and everything from comedy to cabaret shows in the Dome Bar every night.

There’s lots of choice when it comes to dining, too, from a Brazilian restaurant where meats are cooked up in an open pit and carved at your table, to an Asian buffet place and a jungle-themed diner with a massive playhouse for kids. The à la carte restaurants are included if you’re staying All Inclusive, and if you’re not, you can just pay to dine at them.

AX Odycy

The pool scene at this hotel in the centre of Qawra is a bit of a showstopper. There’s an adults-only rooftop pool with an infinity edge and sea views, for starters. Plus, the hotel has a tunnel that leads you down to a second pool area, with a panoramic lido, kids’ waterpark and access to the sea.

This is also where you’ll find one of the hotel’s à la carte restaurants, Trattoria Ricardo, which serves up Italian fare cooked in a wood-burning stove. The hotel also has two big buffet places, a gastropub with live music, five bars and a creperie – so you’re not going to go hungry, or thirsty.
