Five reasons why holidays are good for your health

Need an excuse for another holiday? You’re in just the right place.

Not feeling a fitness regime? The good news is, you don’t need to fork out for a gym membership or pricey superfoods to kick start your health, as it’s scientifically proven that holidays are good for you. Yep, instead of dragging yourself out of bed for an early morning run, just book a much-needed break and you’ll be doing wonders for your health. Best of all, experts reckon the benefits from even a short holiday last for months. A study by the American Psychiatric Association found that people who hadn’t taken a holiday in the past year were nearly 30 times more stressed than those who took two or more. Here’s how holidays keep you in tip top shape…

1. Boost your vitamin D levels

It’s safe to say vitamin D is lacking in the UK’s colder months. On average, the UK sees just above 40 hours of sunshine in December. Yep, not even a couple of hours per day. The good news is, we’re less than a few hours from destinations that bag way more sunshine hours than us. The Canary Islands are a perfect pick – Tenerife is one of the sunniest islands, with more than five hours of sunshine per day in December. We just did some quick maths, and that means Tenerife sees more sunshine in a week than we do across the whole month! A study published by Cambridge University^ found there’s a link between low vitamin D levels and low mood, so a holiday can really help give you a boost in the cold, dark winter months back home.

2. There’s plenty of time for swimming

Pools are an important part of most holidays, whether you like them Olympic-sized, packed with waterslides or adults-only. One of the best things about our TUI BLUE hotels are the swim-up rooms, where you can go from bed to pool in a matter of minutes. There’s no better incentive to start the day with a morning swim than when the pool is right on your doorstep. Swimming is a great activity as it works out every main muscle in your body, so you’ll be doing a full body workout without even realising. If you’re more of a sea-swimmer, pick a resort that’s footsteps from the beach like TUI BLUE The Passage in Thailand or the Azul Beach Resort Negril by Karisma. You’ll reap the benefits of swimming in saltwater including deep pore cleansing and promoting extra blood flow to the skin.

3. You can have fresh meals prepped for you

If you’re bored of preparing salads and juicing vegetables, you might want to think about an All Inclusive holiday. And, it’s not all about the endless buffets, you can take your pick from light lunches, smoothies on the beach and gourmet à la carte meals made from fresh local ingredients, too. Our ROBINSON holidays were made for health-conscious holidaymakers. We’ve got resorts in Portugal, Fuerteventura, Cape Verde and beyond. Get ready for activities and meals tailored towards keeping you active and feeling great. There’s plenty of locally-sourced fish and meat to tuck into, too, and each resort also comes with a WellFood® station, where you can fuel up on nutritional dishes and energy-boosting smoothies.

4. Spa days are easy to come by

There’s no better way to unwind than with a luxury spa treatment, and our zen-like Sensatori by TUI BLUE spas are top of their class. They’re designed to stimulate all five senses, so you can expect music, soft lights and delicate aromas. Special treatments are on the menu at the resorts, which include the likes of diamond facials and sea-salt body buffs.

5. Fitness classes are better on a beach

We don't reckon there's much worse than waking up extra early on a cold winter morning and dragging yourself to the gym. But on holiday, a sunrise yoga session or morning jog on the beach makes a great start to the day. The range of new activities you can try, like paddle boarding, windsurfing and archery, means you might even discover a new hobby. Our ROBINSON resorts offer around 60 activities, where you can try everything from catamaran sailing and body boarding to volleyball and basketball. Our TUI BLUE hotels line up sports and activities for all ages, too. Keep your eye peeled for tennis, snorkelling, salsa, aerobics and much more. You’ll also find a packed activity schedule at all of our TUI MAGIC LIFE resorts which include a mixture of fitness classes and watersports like wakeboarding, mountain biking and aerobics.
