With holidays to Kissimmee, you get the best of both worlds – close to the thrills and spills of Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando, but far enough away when you want to escape all the madness.
Kissimmee is a small town in the heart of Florida with a big personality. On its doorstep are Orlando’s biggest theme parks – Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld Orlando. But when you need to put your feet back on the ground, Kissimmee’s old-fashioned ways are the perfect antidote.
Kissimmee’s historic downtown is the place that time forgot. It’s filled with classic American diners, antique shops and right in the middle is the Old Town Mall – a replica village with an antique fairground and a classic car parade every Saturday. But outside the centre there are more up-to-date attractions, from shopping malls to dinner shows, and a few adventure golf courses for good measure.
The theme parks
The Walt Disney World Resort is Kissimmee’s nearest neighbour, so the Magic Kingdom, the Epcot Centre as well as Animal Kingdom Park and Disney Springs are all within a 20-minute drive. Slightly further away is Universal Orlando, with its Hogwarts Castle and 4D Shrek. And for aquatic adventures, you’ve got the choice between Discovery Cove, a tropical paradise with dolphins, reefs and waterfalls, and SeaWorld, home of Shamu, the killer whale.
Just outside Kissimmee is Florida country – think sleepy creeks, rust-coloured cattle ranches and lush citrus groves. In the wetlands of Boggy Creek and St John’s River are wild birds, turtles and alligators – sign up for an airboat tours if you want to see them. And Kissimmee is also a golfer’s paradise, with an array of championship courses in striking distance.
