Chicago holidays
Jump to sections
City breaks to Chicago are a selection box of things to do – you can bask on beaches, gaze up at skyscrapers and admire world-renowned art, all in one lakeside city.
The city by the lake
Chicago’s a city of contrasts – it’s pulled up to the south-western shore of Lake Michigan, so waterfront views and skyscraper-clad skylines come hand-in-hand. The best way to take in the sights is on a walk or bike ride along the city’s Lakefront Trail – pretty parks, open water and dramatic backdrops make up the scenery here. And Chicago’s breezy lakeside location is one possible explanation for its most common nickname – the Windy City. It’s not actually the windiest city in the USA, though – that title goes to Boston.
Art all around
Art enthusiasts have plenty to see and do here – the city’s home to a scattering of high profile galleries. The Art Institute of Chicago houses a huge collection of Monet’s paintings, and Corbett vs Dempsey shines a light on up-and-coming talent. And the art scene doesn’t stop there – the city’s famed for its public sculptures and bold street murals. You can check out the iconic Greetings from Chicago mural in Logan Square, and snap a selfie with the giant, shiny Cloud Gate sculpture in Millennium Park.
Famous food
Another thing Chicago’s famed for is its food. There’s loads here for foodies to rave about, from the iconic deep dish pizza to the must-try Chicago-style hot dogs. When it comes to pizza, locals surprisingly tend to opt for thin crust slices – you’ll find them served up from food trucks all over the city. Italian beef sandwiches are another firm favourite on the street food scene – they make for a messy-but-oh-so-tasty lunch. And as America’s meatpacking capital, the city’s not short of a steakhouse or two, either.
Sports to shout about
Chicago knows more than a thing or two about sports – the city’s home to top teams from all five major American sports – baseball, hockey, football, American football and basketball. So if sport’s your thing, no visit here would be complete without a trip to see a game. Whether you’re watching the Cubs play baseball at Wrigley Field, or cheering on the Bulls in a basketball game at the United Center, a buzzing atmosphere’s pretty much guaranteed. For a more low-key affair, you can opt for a stadium tour instead.
