Sustainability at TUI

Discover our mission to create responsible, enjoyable holidays that have a positive impact on the places you love to visit.

People, Planet, Progress

We know that going away on holiday is one of life’s great pleasures – you get to relax, recharge your batteries and make unforgettable memories. But we also know that flying planes and running hotels has an impact on the environment, and our planet as a whole. As a company, we’ve pledged to become a net-zero company by 2050 at the latest, and we’re working hard to make that goal a reality.

With that being said, some of the things we need to achieve this aim aren’t readily available at scale right now. But that’s not an excuse to do nothing. We’ve committed to 2030 emission reduction targets for our own airline, cruise ships and hotels and had them validated by the independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a collaboration between the UN Global Compact and WWF, amongst others.

We’re also implementing a bunch of other planet-friendly measures to make sure all of our operations are as clean and as environmentally friendly as they can be. To do this, we’re focusing on four key areas:

  • Reducing our emissions

  • Supporting local economies and communities

  • Protecting the natural world

  • Waste reduction and management

Our fuel-efficient airline. . At TUI Airways, we’re continually exploring ways to enhance our fuel efficiency and reduce our environmental impact. We use the Boeing 737 MAX for short and mid-haul flights, and the 787 Dreamliner for far-flung holidays. Both of these aircraft have engines that are much more efficient than the planes they replaced in the TUI fleet. For example, the Boeing 737 MAX beats the plane it replaced by 16% – plus, it produces 40% less noise pollution. And we’re not stopping there. We’re committed to monitoring ongoing advancements to secure the most sustainable aviation fuel while continuing to cut our carbon emissions.

Marella Cruises. . At Marella Cruises, we’re on a mission to bring you the best memories at sea, while minimising our impact on the places we visit. That’s why we’re committed to making improvements across our fleet, and are planning and testing new ways to meet our ambitious sustainability goals. Since 2019, we’ve cut food waste onboard by 90% and eliminated over 9 million pieces of single-use plastic. But that’s not all, our teams make education and enrichment a priority in holiday destinations around the world. At our global ports, our ships welcome children from local schools to learn about ocean conservation and marine careers.Engaging future generations is one of the many ways we’re looking ahead to create positive change. We’ve also planned a series of installations, upgrades and actions through to 2030 to help us to achieve our carbon reduction targets. We’re fitting our ships with propeller caps to increase fuel efficiency and cut emissions. We’re also using silicone hull paint across our fleet to reduce friction and protect biodiversity in our oceans and seas. You might also notice films on our windows when you’re next onboard our ships. These reflect sunlight and heat, helping you to keep cool and comfortable, while reducing the need for air conditioning throughout the journey.Though we’re working hard to minimise our impact, we recognise there’s always more to do. We all have a responsibility to help tackle climate change, prevent pollution, and protect our oceans. We believe that by working together with our partners, suppliers, the wider cruise sector, and you – our loyal passengers – we can make positive change.

A few things we're up to

TUI River Cruises

We want to help keep Europe’s waterways as pristine as possible, so our river cruise ships are playing their part. For example, you won’t find any plastic straws, and we’re cutting down on the number of single-use plastic bottles we have onboard. Instead, each cabin comes with a reusable water bottle, and paper straws are the norm in the bars and restaurants. We’ve also put recycling bins in the public areas across all of our ships. All three of our ships were completely renovated before setting sail and the old furniture was donated to a local charity in the Netherlands. To top it all off, some of the new carpet we installed is made out of recycled fishing nets.

Plastic usage

We’ve all seen and heard the sad stories about the effect plastic has on the environment, and for us the call to action was loud and clear. That’s why TUI has joined the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI) to ensure problematic plastics are removed from our sector as quickly and sustainably as possible.

TUI has been working for many years to reduce the use of single-use plastic and switch to more sustainable alternatives, like reusable water bottles and straws made from pasta and paper. So far, over 257 million pieces of single-use plastic have been removed from our hotels, cruise ships, airline and offices since 2015. Whichever holiday you choose in our line-up, you can relax knowing we’re constantly looking at ways to improve our sustainability efforts.

TUI Magic Life Cala Pada

Our Green & Fair hotels are spread across some of the globe’s must-see cities, beach spots and mountain villages. In Ibiza, the TUI Magic Life Cala Pada serves up the island’s storybook scenery and a cluster of cool sustainability features. This beachside hotel sidles up to a pine and juniper-backed beach and generates its energy from renewable sources. In fact, guests have solar thermals to thank for their hot showers and temperature-controlled water. And, as for the source – a well, nestled within the hotel’s grounds, keeps water flowing throughout the hotel.

Our solar plant in Turkey

At TUI we’ve reached a significant new milestone in our mission to reduce the environmental footprint of our hotel operations. Our first ever solar plant has gone live in Turkey and we’re using its energy to power select hotels. The acquisition of our plant in the Antalya Mountains is a big step forward in our plan to invest in clean energy sources. In future more of the region’s hotels could be run using renewable energy produced by our plants. That makes Turkey one to watch – what happens here could set the standard for destinations to come.

The Destination Co-Lab Rhodes

Making tourism destinations more sustainable is part of future-proofing holidays for communities, the environment and generations to come. That’s why, in 2022, we teamed up with the Greek and Southern Aegean governments to launch the Destination Co-Lab Rhodes. This initiative brings together the local tourism industry and international partners to help strengthen and transform Rhodes’ tourism industry into a shining star for sustainability around the world. Such a big-name destination taking on its own transformation to become more sustainable in this way is a world first.
