Turkey’s a treasure chest when it comes to attractions. Over in Istanbul, one of the world’s largest cities, you’ll find plenty of man-made marvels to admire. Take Hagia Sophia, a domed mosque that rises elegantly above the city, or the famous Blue Mosque that’s bathed in sapphire in the evening. Then, you’ve got Topkapi Palace, a 15th-Century residence of the Ottoman sultans. Head beyond Istanbul, and you’ll find a country decorated with national parks, turquoise beaches that cling to its Mediterranean coastline and more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than you can wave a freshly baked baklava at. Fancy it? Read up on the top attractions below and take a look at the best deals to Turkey.
ust a boat trip from Fethiye you’ll find Butterfly Valley – a tropical oasis home to over 100 species of butterflies. This trip will take you to a tucked away slice of Turkey nicknamed ‘paradise found’. Decorated with lavender-flowered trees and a 350-metre high waterfall, the preservation area is the prime place to spot an endangered species fluttering by. Once you’ve done your share of spotting (the orange, black and white spotted Jersey Tiger is our favourite), lie back on Butterfly Beach – a pristine slice of sand lapped by turquoise water.
Olu Deniz’s Blue Lagoon snakes around Turkey’s south coast and is one of the most photographed beaches in the Mediterranean. On top of being a great place to soak up vitamin D, it’s also known for its paragliding and turtle spotting opportunities. And, thanks to its shallow waters, it’s the perfect spot for families with little ones they want to keep a close eye on.
Tick off a trip to an under-the-radar natural wonder, Pamukkale, and you’ll find marble terraces flooded with mineral-rich waters that cascade over a cliff. Dip into the bath-warm spring water for a swim, or get your phone ready for Instagram-ready views of the valley below. The UNESCO World Heritage Site, also known as the Cotton Fortress, is footed by a town that offers plenty of restaurants, shops and smaller mineral pools if you want to explore further.
Fairy tales aren’t restricted to fantasy lands – head to Cappadocia and you’ll find a real one. Set high on a hill in Anatolia, enchanting spires made of volcanic rock form pillars that stand as tall as 130 feet. And, as if things couldn’t get more magical, this place is also known for its hot air balloon rides that take off at sun rise and float above the valley. Fancy a stay here? You’re in luck. Some of these caves and chimneys have been converted into hotels.
If you’ve always fancied going back in time and ticking an ancient world off your list, head to Ephesus. The ancient Roman archaeological site was once regarded as one of the most important centres of the old Mediterranean world, and remains one of the best preserved Roman ruins in Europe. Prepare to be impressed by streets made of marble that offer up everything from libraries to grand theatres.
