Fethiye Bay, Turkey

Fethiye holidays offer a bright slice of the Turquoise Coast, where authentic Turkish experiences sit alongside yacht‑filled promenades and ancient Lycian sites. It’s one of the standout escapes in the Dalaman region, set within the natural beauty of Mugla Province, and blends modern marina life with a deep sense of history in a way few coastal towns manage.

Blending heritage and modernity

Fethiye’s story is one of resilience, rising strong after the 1958 earthquake to become one of the most characterful towns on the Aegean Sea. Its atmospheric Old Town (Paspatur) still hums with traditional shops and shaded lanes, while the yacht‑filled marina and Fethiye Port dining scene bring a modern, easygoing buzz to the waterfront. Blue Flag beaches sit within easy reach, giving you a mix of clear‑water swimming and coastal relaxation.

Escapes to Calis Beach

The Dolmus bus service or water taxi from Fethiye Harbour can whizz you across the bay to the nearest beach at Calis. It’s a pretty long strip here, with the sand and shingle dipping gently into crystal-clear Aegean waters. And it’s all backed by bars and restaurants serving up snacks, cold drinks and lunches, making it an easy place to spend a whole day. There are kitesurfing and windsurfing schools here, too, and a sunset-facing promenade.

Stepping back into the old quarter

The town’s pretty modern, thanks to the post-earthquake rebuild. But the Paspatur – or old quarter – is the place to explore cobbled streets that curve past whitewashed mosques. Artisan gift shops sell bags, leather and pottery, and there are friendly cafés where you can stop for a sweet, strong Turkish coffee. Plus, visit Umbrella Street for a photo, and stop in at authentic meze tavernas to refuel.

A base for excursions

Fethiye is a great jumping‑off point for exploring the region, with Butterfly Valley boat trips offering hidden sands and dramatic cliffs, and the abandoned village of Kayakoy adding a haunting historic stop. The town is also home to the cliff‑carved Lycian Rock Tombs, close to the ruins of Tlos, and within easy reach of Saklikent National Park for canyon walks. The Olu Deniz Blue Lagoon and stretches of the Lycian Way round out a mix of nature, history and coastal scenery.
