Holidays to Costa Caleta – or Caleta de Fustes as the locals call it – plot you in a sheltered horseshoe bay on Fuerteventura’s east coast, just 10 minutes’ drive from the island’s airport. Majorero culture and year-round Canary Island sun set the scene here, and a black-sand beach is the cherry on top.
This place is the ultimate in purpose-built resort convenience, with a relaxed pace by day and a lively nightlife scene come sunset. You won’t go wanting for shops, bars or restaurants, which are all to hand on the main street. A seafront castle called Castillo de San Buenaventura and the quaint El Castillo harbour are among the must sees here, and if you fancy yourself as a bit of a culture vulture, you’ll appreciate the area’s traditional Canarian architecture.
With its position in a horseshoe-shaped sandy bay, Playa del Castillo scores highly on the beach front. The Blue Flag-awarded stretch offers sheltered swimming conditions and volcanic rock pools, and it’s also a bit of a windsurfing and paddleboarding hub. When you’re not lounging around on the sand or getting out on the water, you can pick from a line-up of beachfront cafés, or head out on a walk around the neighbouring Guirra Beach, where a couple of tiny islets are connected to the mainland via a bridge over the sea.
Family-friendly play parks, an 18-hole minigolf course, a marine park, a shopping centre, a cinema and a nearby zoo make Costa Caleta a popular choice for anyone travelling with kids in tow. On Fridays in July and August, there’s even face-painting and a bouncy castle down by the beach. The shallow water’s perfect for children to paddle in, too.
The capital city, Puerto del Rosario, is only a 20-minute bus ride away, so it’s a popular daytrip destination. The place used to be called Puerto Cabras – that’s Goat’s Port – but these days it’s not goats you’ll see but a sculpture park. If you’re driving, 40 minutes takes you to the desert landscape of Dunas de Corralejo National Park. Other options include excursions to the historic capital, Betancuria, and visits to the Salinas del Carmen Salt Museum and the Museo del Queso Majorero, AKA the cheese museum.
